What's Different 

Now that you have installed the latest version of HP LaserRX/MPE, take a
look at some of the changes.  First, follow along with the overview.
Just for now, resist browsing.  You'll learn more about the changes
faster if you follow along with this short chapter.

Automatic Version Display 

First, start HP LaserRX/MPE. The first change you should notice is that
version information automatically displays.  It will stay on your screen
about 7 seconds or until you press Enter or click  OK.

A New Macro Menu 

Secondly, notice that the Menu bar has also changed.  There is a new
Macro menu between the Configure and Help menus.

If you click on Macro (or press Alt-M) you'll see several new commands
that allow you to record and play back a macro script:

The macro feature is discussed in more detail in Chapter 8 .

New Commands in the File Menu 

The File menu has changed significantly.  Some new commands have been
added, some old ones have been renamed and enhanced, and one (Control)
has been removed.

The table below summarizes changes to the File menu.  For now, we'll only
briefly discuss these changes and save the more detailed discussion for
later.

Connect          Connect LAN and Connect Serial

                 You no longer have to go into the Configure Options
                 dialog box to indicate LAN or serial.  Instead, you get
                 the appropriate dialog box through these commands.

Disconnect       Disconnect LAN and Disconnect Serial

                 Same as above.

Xport            Export Window

                 The Xport command has been renamed to Export Window.
                 TIFF file format functionality has been added.

(none)           Export Logfile

                 The new Export Logfile command let's you export larger
                 volumes of textual data than you find in one graph or
                 tabular window.

(none)           Exit

                 The new Exit command exits you from HP LaserRX/MPE.

Control          (Removed)

                 The Control command has been eliminated.  You can access
                 the Microsoft Windows control panel through Microsoft
                 Windows.

New Commands in the Zoom Menu 

The Zoom Detail command has been replaced with two commands:  Zoom
Application and Zoom Process.  You can now get application and process
detail data on any graph (as long as the logfile contains such data).

A Different Draw Menu 

The Draw menu has changed as well.  The Global and Application commands
have been replaced with a Draw Graphs command.  Just by clicking on Draw
you automatically get the new dialog box.  The new Draw Graphs dialog box
lists all available graph types in one Available Graphs list box.

Status Messages 

The new Status bar on the main window informs you of the status of the
last operation performed.

The Status Bar appears blue when everything is all right, yellow when a
warning appears, and red when trouble exists.

Peak Disc Utilization 

The Util (%) variable on the Global Disc Summary graph has been renamed
Peak Disc Util.  This change reflects a change in the method of
computation.

The following two examples explain how peak disc utilization is now
calculated for 5-minute (detail) data and hourly or daily (summary) data.

5-minute Detail Data.     

Each 5-minute data point represents the disc utilization value for the
disc that was busiest during the 5-minute interval.

For example, disc 1 may have been the busiest disc for the first 5
minutes and disc 2 may have been the busiest disc for the second 5
minutes.  Thus, the first data point represents disc 1; the second data
point represents disc 2.

Hourly or Daily Summary Data.     

Each hourly or daily data point represents the average of the 5-minute
peak disc utilization values over the interval.

For example, suppose disc 1 is 100 percent utilized for the first
30-minute interval and disc 2 is 0 percent utilized.  In the second
30-minute interval, disc 2 is 100 percent utilized and disc 1 is 0
percent utilized.  The summary peak disk utilization metric would show
100 percent utilization over the hourly interval.  This corresponds to
the utilization shown for the 5-minute detail data (each 5-minute data
point for the first 30-minute interval would show that disc 1 is 100
percent utilized and each 5-minute data point for the second 30-minute
interval would show that disc 2 is 100 percent utilized).


NOTE  We could calculate hourly/daily summarized peak disc utilization
      using another method.  We could average each disc's utilization
      over the summary interval and then use the value of the busiest
      disc.  We chose not to use this method, however, because it may
      mask potential disc bottleneck conditions.

      For example, applying the alternative method to the situation
      described above, the summary peak disc utilization metric would
      show 50 percent utilization over the hourly interval (versus 100
      percent as described above).  This is because the average
      utilization of disc 1 and disc 2 over the entire time is 50
      percent.  The peak of those two values is 50 percent.
