Making a Serial Connection

Use the HP LaserRX/MPE File Connect Serial command to make a logical
connection from your PC to an HP 3000.

To Use an Established Serial Connection

The simplest way to make a single, serial connection is to use a terminal
emulator, such as Microsoft's Terminal program to connect to an HP 3000
before you invoke HP LaserRX/MPE. To make the connection and log on, then
return to the PC, proceed as follows:

   1. Start Windows.

   2. Start Terminal (Terminal is accessed from the Accessories window)
and connect to the HP 3000.

   3. Without logging off, exit the Terminal program.

   4. Start HP LaserRX/MPE.

   5. Within HP LaserRX/MPE, invoke the File Connect Serial command.

   6. Verify the port through which you made the connection (COM1 or
       COM2).

   7. Check off the Host Logon option and click OK to have HP
LaserRX/MPE recognize your previously established connection.

To Connect to an HP 3000 (Serial)

   1. Select the Connect Serial command under the File menu.

       _________________________________________________________________

NOTE The File Connect Serial command will be dimmed and you will
not be able to select it if the PC is already serially
connected to an HP 3000 through HP LaserRX/MPE.

       The following dialog box appears:

Figure 4-1. Connect Serial Dialog Box

You can use the Host Logon option on the Connect Serial dialog box
to enter the logon string for the HP 3000 to which you are
       connecting.

You can also use the Command File option to invoke a basic serial
command file in order to make the connection. You would use this
option when the serial connection sequence is complex.

          a. If you use the Host Logon option, enter the following
information on the Connect Serial dialog box:

                 i. Host Logon.

Enable (check) Logon Host to have HP LaserRX/MPE log
on to the host HP 3000.

By checking Logon Host, you are telling HP
LaserRX/MPE to issue a Hello command to the host HP
                     3000.

By not checking Logon Host, you are telling HP
LaserRX/MPE that you have already made a connection
to the host outside of HP LaserRX/MPE, as through a
                     terminal emulation product.

                ii. Hello.

You can enter a logon string up to 72 characters
long in the Hello edit box. This establishes a
session on the HP 3000. On MPE V systems, it is
important that you use a logon string that connects
you to an account containing the HP LaserRX/MPE
                     system library (SL).

Passwords are masked as they are entered. You will
see an @ for every letter entered. The logon string
is encrypted in the WIN.INI file.

iii. Click OK to complete the Connect Serial command and
                     close the dialog box.

A message appears on the Status bar informing you
when a connection to the HP 3000 has been made.

          b. If you use the Command File option:

                 i. Click on the Command File box and type a fully
qualified basic serial command file name or use the
Directories and Files boxes to locate the basic
serial command file you want to issue HP 3000 logon
                     statements.

                     ___________________________________________________

NOTE Only basic serial command files with a .CMD
extension are listed in the Files box.

                     ___________________________________________________

ii. Enter any required basic serial command file
                     password.

To type a basic serial command file password, first
                     click on the Password box.

iii. Click OK to complete the File Connect Serial
command and close the dialog box.

Only one serial connection at a time is supported.

A basic serial command file is constructed outside of HP LaserRX/MPE. You
can use the Connect Serial dialog box to invoke an already established
file. (Users familiar with HP AdvanceLink will recognize .CMD files.)

Sample .CMD files are described in "Developing a Basic Serial Command
File" . Detailed information is found in the manual Using Basic
Serial Connection Files.

Developing a Basic Serial Command File.

The easiest way to develop a custom basic serial command file tailored to
your connection environment is to edit one of the sample basic serial
command files supplied with HP LaserRX/MPE.

Several sample basic serial command files are located in the LASERRX
directory.

BSCMODEM.CMD A generic basic serial command file for setting up a
                    modem.

BSCPORT.CMD A generic basic serial command file for logging on
                    over a data switch.

BSCRESET.CMD A generic basic serial command file for breaking a
                    serial connection.

DIRECT.CMD A basic serial command file for setting up direct
                    connections.

MODEM.CMD A basic serial command file for setting up modem
                    connections specific to HP LaserRX/MPE.

For additional information on how to create a basic serial command file
for serial connections, see Using Basic Serial Connection Files.

To Set Serial Connect Defaults

If you use the same serial connection most of the time, you may want to
set it as a default in the Serial Connect dialog box.

   1. Open the Configure menu and select Serial Connect. The Serial
       Connect dialog box will appear.

   2. Enter either a default logon string or a default basic serial
       command file name.

The fields in the Serial Connect dialog box are identical to those
in the Connect Serial dialog box located under the File menu. See
"To Connect to an HP 3000 (Serial)" in this chapter or "Serial
       Connect Command" .

   3. Click Save to use these settings for this HP LaserRX/MPE session
and save these settings as the defaults for future sessions.

You can use the BSCV utility in the HP LaserRX/MPE subdirectory to
encrypt the basic serial command file to protect embedded passwords.

To Disconnect from an HP 3000 (Serial)

   1. Open the File menu and select Disconnect Serial.

       The following dialog box appears:

Figure 4-2. Disconnect Serial Dialog Box

   2. If you are using a simple point-to-point connection, you do not
need a disconnect basic serial command file. Click the Logoff
Host box until an X appears. HP LaserRX/MPE will thereafter issue
a BYE command to the host HP 3000 when you exit HP LaserRX/MPE.

If Logoff Host is not checked, HP LaserRX/MPE leaves you connected
to the host HP 3000 when you end your HP LaserRX/MPE session.

If you have a complex serial connection--for example, one that
requires a hang up for the modem connection--you need a disconnect
basic serial command file. If you do need a disconnect basic
serial command file, enter the basic serial command file name and
       the password.

          a. To enter a basic serial command file name, either click on
the Command File box and type a fully qualified basic
serial command file name, or use the Directories and Files
              boxes.

          b. To enter a basic serial command file password, click on the
Password box and type the password.

You can use the BSCV utility in the HP LaserRX/MPE
subdirectory to encrypt the basic serial command file to
              protect embedded passwords.

   3. Click OK to complete the File Disconnect Serial command and close
       the dialog box.

To Set Serial Disconnect Defaults

If you use the same disconnect basic serial command file most of the
time, you should use the Serial Disconnect dialog box to establish a
default disconnection sequence.

   1. Open the Configure menu and select Serial Disconnect. The Serial
       Disconnect dialog box will appear.

   2. Enter your default serial disconnect specifications.

The fields in the Serial Disconnect dialog box are identical to
those in the Disconnect Serial dialog box located under the File
menu. See "To Disconnect from an HP 3000 (Serial)" in this
chapter or "Serial Disconnect Command" .

   3. Click Save to use these settings for this HP LaserRX/MPE session
and save these settings as the defaults for future sessions.

You can use the BSCV utility in the HP LaserRX/MPE subdirectory to
encrypt the basic serial command file to protect embedded passwords.
