Starting the System

There are four occasions when you are required to start your system:

after your system has failed and you have saved main memory to tape
after you have updated or changed the system
before and after installation of the operating system and configuration
after you have shut down the system

To save main memory to tape

Use the DUMP utility to perform a memory dump after a system failure or hang, for a recurring system problem, or when the system fails to boot properly. Have the tape analyzed by your Hewlett-Packard applications engineer or the Hewlett-Packard Response Center.

To dump memory to tape, perform the following steps:

Press CTRL B to put the system in control mode.
Enter TC and press {{Return}} to soft reset the system.
Press any key to override the autoboot.
Enter Y for "Boot from primary boot path (Y or N)?"
Enter Y for "Interact with IPL (Y/N)?"
Mount a blank or scratch tape on the tape drive.
At the ISL prompt, enter the DUMP command to save the current state of the system's main memory and secondary storage to tape.
- To dump main memory and data swapped to disk, enter DUMP SUBSET=ALL. This is the default.
- To dump only main memory to tape, enter DUMP SUBSET=MEMORY.
Enter the user identification string (typically a name and the date) for this dump. For example:
ISL>TEST DUMP 1/9/94
After the dump is done, the system boots.
At the ISL prompt, enter the START command and logon. (If autoboot is enabled and you have an autoboot file, you don't need to enter the START command because the system starts automatically.)
