These steps are for a clean installation of HP SIM on your Windows system. If a previous version of HP SIM is installed on your system and you want to upgrade your data, see Chapter 8 “Upgrading HP Systems Insight Manager” for more information.

This procedure verifies that your system meets the minimum requirements and prepares your system for installation.

  1. Install and configure the CMS. The procedure to complete this step is in this chapter.

  2. Configure HP SIM for your environment. See Chapter 4 “Configuring HP SIM using the First Time Wizard” or Chapter 5 “Configuring HP SIM using the Options menu” for the recommended tasks.

  3. Install and configure the required Management Agents on the systems that are to be managed by the CMS. This step is covered in the first section of Chapter 6 “Setting up and configuring managed systems”.

  4. Configure the remaining protocols for the managed systems. See Chapter 6 “Setting up and configuring managed systems” for details.

NOTE: If you are installing HP SIM with a local SQL database on a Windows XP SP2 machine that is not a member of a domain, Simple File Sharing is automatically disabled. The Simple File Sharing setting on Windows XP Professional changes the way local users are authenticated.

Enabled = Guest only. Local users authenticate as Guest.

Disabled = Classic. Local users authenticate as themselves.

This setting is located in the Local Security Policy Editor under Start->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Local Security Policy. Select Security Settings->Local Policies->Security Options->Network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts. This change is necessary for the database install.

By default, Classic local, user authenticate as themselves. To enable Guest only, local user authenticate as guest, select this option from the list and click Apply.

To verify and prepare your system, perform the following procedure:

  1. Verify your system meets the minimum requirements. See “System requirements” for details.

  2. Install the required Windows and Microsoft SQL Server Service Packs.

    NOTE: If you are using a remote SQL database, leave the default as Master to insure that all necessary databases are created with correct permissions.

  3. Verify your system has at least one partition formatted for the NTFS file system, on which the HP SIM server software is to be installed.

    If this requirement is not yet met, create or format an NTFS partition for use by HP SIM.

  4. If you already have HP Instant Support Enterprise Edition (ISEE) Windows Client software A.03.95 or older, installed on your CMS, then you must decide whether you would prefer to keep the functionality of ISEE or install HP Remote Support Pack. The two cannot run on the same CMS. HP Remote Support Pack does provide Remote Monitoring for the same platforms as ISEE. However, only ISEE supports proactive collection data. If you do wish to configure HP Remote Support Pack along with HP SIM 5.x, then you must remove the ISEE client software first.

    To remove ISEE, complete the following:

    1. Select Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs.

    2. Select HP Instant Support Enterprise Edition Client from the list of installed programs, then click Change/Remove.

  5. Verify that Microsoft Access Data Components (MDAC) 2.7 Service Pack 1 or higher is installed. Navigate to C: \Program Files\Common Files\System\Ado, and right-click the icon for the msado15.dll file. Select Properties, and click the Version tab to display the version number. If the file is not found in this path, use the Windows search engine to find the file. If you must download MDAC, see http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/, and search for MDAC Service Pack.

  6. Before you proceed with the install, if you are going to perform a custom install for HP System Management Homepage see System Management Homepage Installation Guide at http://h18013.www1.hp.com/products/servers/management/agents/documentation.html for specific user name requirements for the product administrator, service account, and database administrator:

    HP SIM can be installed three ways:

    • Typical install - Requires minimal user interaction. See Typical install for more information.

    • Custom install - Enables you to select the components you want to install and to use non-default values for each component. See Custom install for more information.

    • Silent install - Requires no user interaction. Administrators can install HP SIM to target systems using command line options. See Silent install for more information.

  7. Download the software, or install it from the HP Management DVD or the HP Insight Software DVD.

    To download the software, see http://www.hp.com/go/hpsim, and on the upper-left of the page under HP Systems Insight Manager, click Download. The HP SIM Download Page appears. Under Download HP Systems Insight Manager, select HP SIM-Windows. Select the latest version for a full product install.

    To install the software from the HP Management DVD, place the DVD in the DVD-ROM drive. The DVD has an autorun feature that launches a license agreement. Agree to the license agreement, and click the Products tab. Click Install under HP SIM to launch the Installer, or click the Products tab, click Explore DVD, and then run setup.exe located at \HPSIM\win_ia32\ to launch the Installer.

    To install the software from the HP Insight Software DVD, place the DVD in the DVD-ROM drive. The DVD has an autorun feature that launches a license agreement. Agree to the license agreement, and click the Products tab. On the sidebar under Foundation Management Products, select HP Systems Insight Manager, then click Install under HP SIM to launch the Installer, or click the Products tab, click Explore DVD, and then run setup.exe located at \HPSIM\win_ia32\ to launch the Installer.

    NOTE: The installing account and the HP SIM service account, both included in the local admins group, are the initial login account.

    The Welcome to the HP Systems Insight Manager Installer window appears. HP SIM examines this system for supported versions of SQL Server and Oracle.

    NOTE: HP does not recommend running RDP with MSDE installed and HP SIM with SQL Server 2005 Express Edition on the same server.Click the drop-down selection box in the upper-right corner of any dialog box to view the HP SIM Installation and Configuration Guide, ReadMe or Release Notes.

  8. Click Next. The System Inspection window appears. The system is inspected for a previous version of HP SIM and a local database.

    After the system inspection is complete, the Database Configuration window appears.

    Select from the following database options:

    • Install and use SQL Express. This option enables you to install and configure HP SIM to use SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.

      To install and use SQL Server 2005 Express Edition:

      1. From the Database Configuration window, select Install and Use SQL Express.

      2. In the Username field, the installing user account appears and can be edited. The account specified must be the user name for the database server.

      3. In the Password field, enter the password for the database server.

        HP SIM does not support the following in a user name and password:

        • A blank password

        • A space followed by a double-quote

        • A backslash (\)

          If you use these characters in your user name or password, the HP SIM database initialization fails.

      4. In the Domain field, enter the domain name for the database server.

      5. Click Next. A dialog box appears indicating files are being extracted. After the files are extracted, a new dialog box appears indicating SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is being installed. After SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is installed, the Select Installation Type window appears.

    • Use SQL/SQL Express. This option is applicable if you have SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2005 Express Edition installed and you want to configure HP SIM to use it.

      To use SQL or SQL Server 2005 Express Edition:

      1. From the Database Configuration window, select Use SQL/SQL Express.

      2. In the Username field, the installing user account appears and can be edited. The account specified must be the user name for the database server.

      3. In the Password field, enter the password for the database server.

        HP SIM does not support the following in a user name and password:

        • A blank password

        • A space followed by a double-quote

        • A backslash (\)

          If you use these characters in your user name or password, the HP SIM database initialization fails.

      4. In the Domain field, enter the domain name for the database server.

      5. Click Next. The Select Installation Type window appears.

    • Use Oracle. This option is applicable if you have Oracle installed and you want to configure HP SIM to use it.

      To configure Oracle:

      1. Install Oracle or verify Oracle is installed.

      2. Create a Database Scheme using the Oracle Database Configuration Assistant. To use the assistant, select Program Files->Oracle-OraHome92->Configuration and Migration Tool.

      3. Select Create a Database, and then select Next.

      4. Select General Purpose, and then select Next.

      5. Enter a name in Global Database Name, for example HPSIM, and then select Next.

      6. Select Dedicated Server Mode, and then select Next.

      7. Select Memory->Custom, and then select Next.

      8. Select Character Sets.

      9. Select Use Unicode (AL32UTF8), and then select Next.

      10. Select Next.

      11. Select Finish, review the options, and then select Okay. The schema will take approximately 10 -15 minutes to create.

      12. When Oracle finishes creating the database, enter the password for SYS and SYSTEM.

      13. Create a user and grant access for the schema:

        1. Open a Command Prompt.

        2. At the prompt, enter sqlplus.

        3. At >login:, enter sys as sysdba.

        4. At >Password:, enter the password.

        5. At SQL>, enter create user sim_manager identified by quake.

        6. At SQL>, enter grant connect, resource, dba to sim_manager.

        7. Exit the Command Prompt utility, using the exit command.

      14. Create the listener for the database schema.

        1. Select Program Files->Oracle-OraHome92->Configuration and Migration Tool->NetConfiguration Assistant.

        2. Select Listener Configuration.

        3. Select Add.

        4. Use the default name of LISTENER, and then select Next.

        5. Select TCP, and then select Next.

        6. Enter the port number, use standard port 1521.

        7. Select No when the Would you like to configure another listener? dialog appears.

        8. In Services, set OracleOraHome92TNSListener to Automatic, and then start the service.

      To use Oracle:

      1. From the Database Configuration window, select Use Oracle. Before using the database you must ensure the database:

        • Uses Unicode character set of AL32UTF8 and national character set of AL16UTF16.

        • The NLS Length is set to BYTE.

        • Has an Oracle user with Database Administrator (DBA) privileges created for the exclusive use by HP Systems Insight Manager.

        • The Oracle database schema is empty. HP SIM must be installed in an empty Oracle database schema.

        • The thin client .jar (ojdbc14.jar) is copied to the system at C:\oracle\ora92\jdbc\lib, and the location specified during installation.

      2. In the Username field, enter the Oracle user name assigned the DBA role.

        NOTE: An Oracle user name cannot contain a backslash (\) or a forward slash (/).

      3. In the Password field, enter the password for the user name specified.

      4. In the Host field, enter the name of the remote or local server where Oracle is installed. An IP address may also be used.

      5. Under Instance name in the Database field, enter the name of the database created on Oracle for the use of HP SIM.

      6. In the Port field, the default 1521 appears but can be edited.

      7. In the JarFile field, enter the full path to theojdbc14.jarfile or click Browse and navigate to the correct location, typically C:\oracle\ora92\jdbc\lib. This path must be accessible through the file system on the CMS. The installation copies the file to the correct location.

      8. In the Host field, the local host name appears and can only be edited if you are performing a fresh install.

      9. Click Next. The Select Installation Type window appears.

        NOTE: If an HP ProLiant Essentials Vulnerability and Patch Management Pack (VPM) MSDE database exists (within the HP SIM database instance or located on a database instance created by VPM), it is upgraded to SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. If the VPM database upgrade fails, a message displays indicating Failed to Upgrade VPM Database to SQL Express, but the HP SIM installation continues.

  9. The Select Installation Type window enables you to select your preferred installation type.

    The following installation options are available:

    • Typical  Select this option to install the included components with minimal user interaction listed under the Available Components for Install.

      If a component is listed as not available for installation on the CMS, then the HP SIM install shell has determined one of the following:

      • The installation prerequisites for the component have not been met.

      • A newer version of the component is currently installed.

      If the component that is present on the CMS is an older version than what is bundled with the HP SIM install shell and it supports an in-place upgrade, it appears in the component list.

    • Custom  Select this option to select the individual components under the Available Components for Install and configure them during installation.
