Insight Orchestration executes the following infrastructure lifecycle management operations:

  • Create Service  Automatically provision infrastructure based on the specification in a service template, using resources allocated from assigned pools

  • Delete Service  Automatically de-provision existing infrastructure and free the resources for use in other services

  • Flex Up Servers  Add servers to an existing infrastructure service, allocating and provisioning them

  • Flex Up Storage  Add data disks to an existing infrastructure service, allocating them and provisioning the servers to which they are attached.

  • Standby servers or service  Deactivate servers and free blade resources

  • Resume servers or service  Reactivate servers and allocate new blade resources

  • Change Lease  Extend or reduce the lifetime of an infrastructure service

Create Service operations

The Create Service operation, automatically provisions an infrastructure based on the specification in a service template, using resources allocated from assigned pools. During a Create Service operation, Insight Orchestration:

  • Validates the request

  • Allocates network and IP addresses allocation

  • Allocates the servers (server blades or virtual machine hosts)

  • Allocates the boot disk (physical and virtual)

  • Obtains approval

  • Creates virtual machine or blade server profile

  • Deploys the operating system and other software to boot disk

  • Configures the virtual hardware

  • Customizes the operating system (networking, sysprep)

  • Allocates the physical data disks

  • Provisions the servers for data disks

  • Boots the servers

  • Executes custom actions

  • Sends notifications

After successfully completing a Create Service operation, the provisioned Insight Orchestration infrastructure service is available for the duration of the lease period and you can access the servers through the network.

A Create Service operation fails when:

  • Resources are not available to allocate

  • SAN administrator cannot create the disks

  • Insight Orchestration administrator rejects the request

Delete Service operations

The Delete Service operation, automatically deprovisions an existing infrastructure and frees the resources for use in other services.

When executing a Delete Service operation, Insight Orchestration:

  • Validates the request

  • Powers off the servers

  • Deletes the virtual machine or server blade profile

  • Scrubs the boot and data disks

  • Deallocates the servers (server blades and virtual machine hosts)

  • Deallocates the networks and IP addresses

  • Deallocates the boot and data disks

  • Executes custom actions

  • Sends notifications

After successfully completing a Delete Service operation, the Insight Orchestration infrastructure service is destroyed, deprovisioning all server, network, and storage resources making them available for new Create Service or Flex Up operation.

If deprovisioning fails, the infrastructure service is still deleted. When this occurs, the Insight Orchestration administrator must manually cleanup the servers or disks.

Flex Up Server operations

During a Flex Up Server operation, Insight Orchestration:

  • Validates the request

  • Allocates the servers (server blades or virtual machine hosts)

  • Allocates IP addresses allocation

  • Allocates the boot disk (physical and virtual)

  • Obtains approval

  • Creates virtual machine or blade server profile

  • Deploys the operating system and other software to boot disk

  • Configures the virtual hardware

  • Customizes the operating system (networking, sysprep)

  • Allocates the physical data disks

  • Provisions the servers for data disks

  • Boots the servers

  • Executes custom actions

  • Sends notifications

After successfully completing a Flex Up Server, Insight Orchestration provisions the additional servers in to the Insight Orchestration infrastructure service, and is available for the duration of the service lease period. You can access the new servers through the network.

A Flex Up Server operation fails when:

  • Resources are not available to allocate

  • SAN administrator cannot create the disks

  • Insight Orchestration administrator rejects the request

Flex Up Storage operations

The Flex Up Storage, adds private or shared data disks to an existing infrastructure service. Insight Orchestration provisions and allocates the storage to their attached servers. When executing a Flex Up Storage operation, Insight Orchestration:

  • Validates the request

  • Allocates the data disks

  • Obtains approval

  • Provisions the servers for data disks

  • Boots the servers

  • Executes custom actions

  • Sends notifications

After successfully completing a Flex Up Storage operation, Insight Orchestration provisions the additional disks in to the Insight Orchestration infrastructure service. You can access the new disks through the network.

A Flex Up Storage operation fails when:

  • Resources are not available to allocate.

  • SAN administrator cannot create the disks.

  • Insight Orchestration administrator rejects the request.

Standby servers or service operations

The Standby operation, places the servers or service in standby. During a Standby operation, Insight Orchestration:

  • Validates the request

  • Deallocates the servers (server blades)

  • Powers off the servers

  • Executes custom actions

  • Sends notifications

After successfully completing the Standby operation, Insight Orchestration deallocates the physical server blades, making them available for other uses. Insight Orchestration retains the server profiles, SAN disks, virtual disks, and powers off the virtual servers.

If the Standby operation fails, Insight Orchestration powers off the servers.

Resume servers or service operations

The Resume operation, restarts the servers or a service. During a Resume operation, Insight Orchestration:

  • Validates the request

  • Reallocates the servers (server blades)

  • Powers on the servers

  • Executes custom actions

  • Sends notifications

When reallocating a server blade on a Resume request, Insight Orchestration must find a server blade that matches the original Logical Server definition, and physical characteristics of the previously allocated server blade, including processor architecture and model. In addition, the new server blade must have at least the same number of processors, amount of memory, and processor speed. If Insight Orchestration cannot find a server blade that meets these requirements, the Resume request fails.

After successfully completing a Resume operation, the physical server blades are allocated and configured into existing server profiles, physical and virtual servers are powered on, and the servers resume normal operation.

If the Resume operation fails, the servers are not available to allocate.

Change Lease operations

The Change Lease operation, extends or reduces the lifetime of an infrastructure service. Lease period tasks include:

  • Validating the request for a new lease period

  • Modifying servers (server blades or virtual machine hosts) allocation for a new lease period

  • Modifying network and IP addresses allocation for a new lease period

  • Modifying disk allocation for a new lease period

  • Obtaining approval to extend a lease

  • Executing custom actions

  • Sending notifications

After successfully completing a Change Lease operation, Insight Orchestration modifies the lease period for the infrastructure and updates the allocation of each resource for the new lease period. If a resource is not available or the administrator rejects the request, the Change Lease Period operation fails.

Manual processes within the lifecycle operations

The execution of the Insight Orchestration lifecycle operations might require you, as an Insight Orchestration administrator, to perform manual tasks. if defined, Insight Orchestration invokes an Operations Orchestration workflow to initiate, remind, or otherwise facilitate a manual task and generates an HP SIM event. You can use Workflow integration or the Insight Orchestration Console interface to signal completion of a manual task.

The manual tasks are associated with paused states in the Insight Orchestration automation and include:

  • Boot disk allocation  When free LUNs, with the correct attributes, are not available for a Create Service or Flex Up Servers operation, and blocks disk allocation, the Insight Orchestration administrator is notified.

The operation pauses until the Insight Orchestration administrator:

    • Works with a SAN administrator to create the storage.

    • Defines the storage in Insight Dynamics — VSE Logical Server Management.

    • Continues the operation.

When the operation continues, Insight Orchestration reattempts to allocate the resources. Success depends on the availability of unused boot LUNs.

  • Approval  After resources are reserved, the Create Service, Flex Up Servers, Flex Up Storage, and Change Lease Period (extend) operations pause for Insight Orchestration administrator approval. The Insight Orchestration administrator can approve or reject the request. If the request is approved, the request continues into provisioning.

  • Manual operating system deployment  A service template typically assigns a Rapid Deployment Pack or virtual machine software to a group of servers, however you can define a template without a software assignment. If you design a template without a software assignment, the Create Service and Flex Up Servers operations pause to enable the Insight Orchestration administrator to deploy the operating system manually. After completing the deployment, the Insight Orchestration administrator continues the operation.

  • Data disk allocation  When free LUNs, with the correct attributes, are not available for a Create Service, Flex Up Servers, or Flex Up Storage operation and blocks disk allocation, the Insight Orchestration administrator is notified.

    The Insight Orchestration administrator:

    • Works with a SAN administrator to create the storage.

    • Defines the storage in Insight Dynamics — VSE Logical Server Management.

    • Continues the operation.

When the operation continues, Insight Orchestration reattempts to allocate the resources.

This pause is always necessary when Insight Orchestration is configured to do manual storage provisioning and data disks are defined in the service template. It may or may not be necessary when Flex-FC storage features are enabled.

  • Data disk scrubbing  If you deployed the operating system manually during the Create Service operation, then you must manually scrub the disk during the Delete Service operation. The Insight Orchestration administrator is notified. The operation pauses until the Insight Orchestration administrator scrubs the disks attached to the servers being deprovisioned, and continues the operation.

  • Data disk deletion  When you configure Insight Orchestration to perform manual storage provisioning, the Insight Orchestration administrator is notified at the end of an Insight Orchestration Delete Service operation. The Insight Orchestration administrator must edit Insight Dynamics — VSE Logical Server Management storage pool entries. You must remove all LUNs added during the manual data disk allocation from the applicable storage pool entries to make them available for provisioning.
