The following updates are all installed on the Hyper-V host(s). After installing these updates on the host, Hyper-V Integration Services should also be installed/updated from the updated host to each VM guest (to be safe — not all patches affect Integration Services on the guests).

  • kb961730: Fix perflib memory leak on Windows Server 2008

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/961730

Fixes memory leak in Windows 2008 performance library on the host, which may result in errors if memory consumption reaches a critical level.

Not installed by Windows Update (must be manually downloaded and installed from the link above).

  • kb950050: Hyper-V RTM update

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950050

This updates Windows Server 2008 to the released version of Hyper-V.

    Installed by Windows Update.

  • kb956697: Hyper-V VSS writer is not used during a backup job

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956697

Required for proper backup of Hyper-V guests.

Installed by Windows Update after the Hyper-V role is added.

  • kb951308: Update for Failover Clustering

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951308

Required for proper management of Hyper-V systems configured within a Windows Failover Cluster.

Not installed by Windows Update (must be manually downloaded and installed from the link above).

  • kb956589: Disk performance counter patch

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956589

Required for collection of correct Hyper-V host and guest performance/utilization metrics in VM Manager, Virtualization Manager, and Capacity Advisor (without this patch, some metrics may not be accurate).

Not installed by Windows Update (must be manually downloaded and installed from the link above).

  • kb956710: Increase the number of logical processors

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956710

In addition to increasing the number of logical processors that can be configured, this patch appears to reduce memory consumption (or memory leaks) on the host, which may result in errors if memory consumption reaches a critical level.

Not installed by Windows Update (must be manually downloaded and installed from the link above).
