This section describes how to build a Web Server Middleware Stack, beginning with the installation of the Linux distribution.

If installing the Web Server Stack on a system with an existing Red Hat Linux distribution, proceed to “Verifying the Linux Distribution Installation”.

Installing the Linux Distribution

This section provides information about how to verify installation of the required packages for the OSMS Web Server. Complete instructions for installation of a Linux distribution are outside the scope of this document.

Required Packages

The Web Server Middleware Stack depends on several software package groups included with the RHEL5 distribution media. You must verify that the following OS package groups are installed:

  • Server configuration tools

  • Web server

  • Development tools

Recommendations

HP recommends installing the Linux distribution as follows:

  • Allocate the required disk space for various partitions using fdisk or disk druid rather than using automated partitioning.

  • Partition the disk into different parts (namely, /home, /usr, /opt …) according to your application requirements. Creating multiple partitions is a security feature and a safe approach for system management.

The space requirements for the middleware components is dependent on the number of components selected for installation. For a full installation of all the middleware components, 36GB of free space is needed. The swap space should be twice the RAM capacity of the system.

Verifying the Linux Distribution Installation

To verify installation of the necessary packages, enter the following:

# rpm –q httpd mod_ssl perl mod_perl php python mod_python webalizer

If any of these packages are not installed, locate the RPM package on the Linux distribution media, and then install.

Additionally, the following packages are necessary to build the mod_jk.so shared library: apr-devel, apr-util-devel, and httpd-devel. Verify these packages are also installed.

NOTE: By default, RHEL5 enables the iptables firewall, which prevents external systems from accessing ports below 1024. See “Appendix B: Frequently Asked Questions”, and verify the firewall is disabled or appropriate rules are set to allow the Apache and Tomcat connection. The system verification steps described later in this document do not work if the iptables firewall is configured improperly.
