Installing SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 10 (SLES 10) on an HP Integrity server involves loading the operating system, and updating the system with the latest patches.

This manual presents a brief summary of a basic SLES 10 installation using the SLES 10 media kit provided by HP. It covers two options for installing SLES 10: the text-based procedure and the GUI-based procedure.

NOTE: Other installation methods are available, such as a network installation, but these are beyond the scope of this document.

The information in this manual supplements the SLES documentation provided by Novell. The SLES 10 media (on either the DVD or CD 1) contains documentation in the /docu directory, including administration and startup guides. Additional SLES installation information is available from the following Novell web site:

http://www.novell.com/documentation/suse.html

NOTE: This manual refers to the setup and configuration tool Yet Another Setup Tool (YaST). YaST is featured in the SUSE LINUX distribution, and is also part of United Linux. As of the Linux 2.6.10 kernel, serial devices on ia64 are named based on the order of ACPI and PCI enumeration. The first device in the ACPI namespace (if any) becomes /dev/ttyS0, the second becomes /dev/ttyS1, and so on, and PCI devices are named sequentially starting after the ACPI devices.

On HP systems you must reconfigure the EFI console and then you can drop the console parameter from kernel boot command. As a workaround, you can try to use console=ttyS1... as a boot parameter instead of console=ttyS0... and so on.

For further information, refer to /usr/src/linux/Documentation/ia64/serial.txt, which is part of the kernel-source software package.
