When the system reboots, the EFI Boot Manager is displayed.

  1. Select SUSE Enterprise LINUX 10.

    SLES begins loading.

  2. YaST then starts, and the installation process creates a package catalog. When that step is complete, YaST displays the next set of dialogs.

Specifying the Host Name and Domain

When prompted, specify a host name for the system, and a domain name, then select Next.

Setting the root Password

YaST displays a dialog for you to specify a password for the root user.

Enter the root password, then select Next.

Configuring the Network

YaST displays the Network Configuration menu. You can use this menu to modify settings such as networks adapters, devices, routing, and modems.

  1. Modify the firewall settings, if you want to. If you select Firewall, the Firewall menu (Figure 2-7) is displayed.

Testing the Network Interface

YaST presents a menu that lets you test the network interface.

Configuring Certificates of Authority

YaST displays a Service Configuration menu that lets you configure the Certificate Authority (CA) and the LDAP server. For details about these services, see the SUSE LINUX documentation from Novell.

Setting User Authentication

YaST displays the User Authentication menu (Figure 2-10). Choose the method you prefer to use for managing user accounts on your system:

  • NIS — manage user accounts centrally by an NIS server

  • LDAP — manage user accounts centrally by an LDAP server

  • Locally (/etc/passwd) — manage user accounts on systems that use a local passwords file.

After selecting an authentication method, select Next.

For more information about these options, see the SUSE LINUX documentation from Novell.

Setting Local Accounts

A menu is displayed that lets you set up local user accounts. To create user accounts, fill in the fields for full user name, login name, and passwords.

When you have finished adding user accounts, select Next. The system confirms that it is writing the system configuration to disk.

Checking Release Notes

YaST gives you the option to access the SUSE LINUX release notes. After reading the release notes, select Next.

Configuring Hardware

YaST displays the Hardware Configuration menu. All devices it has found, such as graphics cards, printers, and sound cards, are identified.

If you want to change any of these device settings, select the device to be modified. You do not have to configure all devices at this time; you can configure some later. However, you should ensure that your graphics card is configured properly.

When you are satisfied with the hardware configuration, select Next.

Creating a Restore File

Before completing the SLES 10 installation, YaST gives you the option to clone the system for Autoyast.. If you choose this option, a configuration filed named autoinst.xml is created in /root. You can use this file to boot from your saved installation settings.

Finishing the Installation

Select Finish to complete the installation of SLES 10.

The system then reboots (Figure 2-11) and displays the login dialog.
