For expanded discussions of data views, see the Application Discovery Help reference in the software.

AD Agents View

The AD Agents tab provides a network-wide view into the presence and activity of Application Discovery agents in your data center or on your network.

Click the Admin/Config tab, then the AD Agents tab, to see the following screen in Figure 3-1.

agent status and location

Use this view to do the following:

  • Automatically accept agent certificates.

  • Set global polling interval for packages and host/processes.

  • See summary statistics for message frequency and rate of data transfer.

  • See the percentage of connected agents out of the total of all known agents that have been recognized by Application Discovery.

  • See indicators of host, WBEM, and agent status showing what is currently known about the host/agent interaction.

  • See the activity associated with each agent, including transmission intervals for packages and processes, average intervals between messages, and average message size.

  • Find machines that are candidates for hosting the Application Discovery agent.

AD Server View

Application Discovery allows you to view the resource consumption of the Application Discovery server in relationship to discovery statistics. To see this summary data, select the Admin/Config tab, then the AD Server tab.

The AD Server tab allows you to do the following actions:

  • See a graph that compares memory consumption of Application Discovery server to discovery for matched and unmatched processes during the same time period.

  • See the total number of discovered applications, packages, and hosts.

  • Set the time span for the graphic data display.

  • Set the maximum number of events to be written event listing.

AD Templates View

The AD Templates screens are your primary view into the templates available for matching applications that are running or installed in your data center or on your network. Application Discovery uses templates to find applications not otherwise found by the package algorithm.

Overall Application Templates View

To see the list of all application templates, select the Admin/Config tab, then the AD Templates tab.

Figure 3-2 shows part of the application template data available in this view.

Figure 3-2  AD Templates Tab Showing Visibility Settings and All Application Discovery Templates

Overall application template view showing
visibility settings, template names, and create new template button.

Use this view to do the following:

  • Access the Create New Application Template' editor.

  • Get an overview of each available application template in the "AD application templates" table, including:

    • a count of all templates

    • associated operating system and architectural information at a glance

  • Find templates that appear to contain errors in the "AD application template errors" table.

  • Access more information for individual templates by clicking the name of the template.

Individual Application Template View

Figure 3-3 shows part of an individual application template screen.

Figure 3-3  Application Discovery Template Summary and Edit Buttons

Template view showing data

Use this view to do the following:

Access the editing capability to change the current attribute settings for the application template.

See the current attribute settings for the application in the template summary.

See the current list of applications that have been matched using the template in the "Applications affected by template" table.

See the list of associated applications assigned to VSE workload definitions in the "Connected Workloads" table.

You can also see the current list of processes that do not match any existing templates by viewing the "Debris not matched by this template" table.

Applications Views

The Applications tab is your primary view into the presence and activity of applications in your data center or on your network. Application Discovery provides multiple application views — by application, by application instance, by host, and by summarizing across your network of managed nodes. The primary application view is the Running Applications view.

Running Applications View (Instances)

The running applications view shows you all instances of all applications that are currently active on your computing systems. To see the running applications view, select the Applications tab, then the Running tab. Figure 3-4 shows part of the data available in the Running Applications view.

Figure 3-4 Running Tab Showing List of Running Application Instances

Partial view of Running Applications tab

Use this view to do the following:

  • See the status of application instances.

  • See all active, recognized application instances on a particular host.

  • See associated operating system and architectural information at a glance (not shown here).

  • See the number of events associated with each application instance on a particular host.

  • Access details for a specific application instance by clicking the application instance name.

  • Access details for the managed node on which the application instance is running by clicking the host name (not shown here).

Discovery View Description

Use the Discovery tab to see the extent of discovery occurring within your entire network of machines. To see the Discovery view, select the Admin/Configtab, then the Discovery tab.

The Figure 3-5 shows part of a Discovery view screen:

Figure 3-5 Discovery Tab Showing Total Application and Process Discovery Counts

Portion of Discovery view screen

Use this view to do the following:

  • See the total number of discovered applications, processes, packages, and templates across the network.

  • See the number of discovered processes, matched and unmatched, for each host or node.

  • See matched objects as a percentage of all known objects on each server.

  • See hosts that do not currently have an agent installed.

  • Set visibility for hosts on Application Discovery screens.

Event View

To see the Events view, click the Events tab.

Figure 3-6 Events Tab Showing Summaries with Severity Indicators

Event data list.

Use this view to do the following:

  • See the timestamp for the event.

  • See the event type.

  • See the assigned severity for the event type.

  • See the object name (can be a template, an application, or a host).

  • For applications, see the host on which the application event occurred and its associated operating system and architectural information.

  • Access information about the server or application for which the event was logged by clicking the object link highlighted in blue.

  • See an indicator showing whether the event is viewable in the HP Systems Insight Manager (HP SIM) event panel (in the column labeled SIM).

Currently, the primary event listing is limited to 500 notifications total by default. However, you can select other options to decrease or increase the size of the list. For more information, see "Modifying the Maximum Size of an Event List" in Application Discovery Help.

To learn about setting event severity, and setting event visibility in HP SIM, see Appendix B: Key to Event Attributes.

Host Views

The Hosts tab provides your primary views into the presence and activity of computing systems in your data center or on your network.

The Overall Hosts View

To see the overall Hosts view, click the Hosts tab.

Figure 3-7 shows a part of the available host data.

Figure 3-7 Hosts Tab Showing All Hosts Known to Application Discovery

Partial view of screen that lists all hosts.

This view shows you information for all systems that have Application Discovery agents installed or running on them. Use this view to do the following:

  • See a system status indicator.

  • Access details for a specific system by clicking the host name in the data table.

  • See a count of all recognized systems.

  • See associated operating system and architectural information at a glance.

  • See the number of events associated with each system.

  • See resource usage statistics for virtual memory, physical memory, and resident memory (not shown here).

  • See the count of processes and running and installed applications on each system (not shown here).

The Individual Host View

An individual host view displays information about system identity, CPU usage, memory usage, and application activity for a specific system.

To see the view for an individual host, click the Host tab, and then the name of the host in the Hosts view table. A new screen opens showing information for a particular system. Figure 3-8 shows part of a typical view for a specific host.

  • See information about current discovered processes and applications (running and installed).

  • Access information for discovered applications (both running and installed) by clicking the name of the application.

  • See system and application event information associated with this host (not shown here).

  • See information about discovered unmatched processes (not shown here).

Package View

Use the Package tab to see all packages discovered across your data center or network of managed systems.
