The Peripheral Device Tool graphical user interface (GUI) is powered by the pdweb and waconf commands introduced in HP-UX 11i v2. These commands are used to invoke the necessary Web tools and the GUI.

This tool uses the olrad(1M) command as well as other existing commands such as ioscan(1M), insf(1M), and diskinfo(1M) to gather data and perform actions on the system. The pdweb GUI can also be accessed via sam(1M).

The driving force behind the Peripheral Device Tool is the use of the On Line Addition and Replacement (OLAR) technology. The olrad command, introduced in HP-UX 11i v2, is used for slot-related information retrieval and actions.

The HP-UX PCI card OL* capability allows the following actions:

  • Adding a new PCI card without affecting other components of the system and without requiring a system reboot.

  • Replacing an existing PCI card without affecting other components of the system and without requiring a system reboot.
