The Peripheral Device Tool can be accessed in any of the following ways:

  • from the command line, using the pdweb command;

  • from a Web browser, using the URL of a pdweb server that has already been started;

  • from the pdweb autostart option;

  • from the HP Servicecontrol Manager (SCM);

  • from the Cards and Devices area of the System Administration Manager (sam(1M)).

pdweb Command

To launch the Peripheral Device Tool from the command line, use the pdweb command.

Command syntax for pdweb.

pdweb [-h] [-F] [-c]

pdweb -s { start | stop | status | restart }

options

When pdweb is invoked without the -s option, both the pdweb server and client components are started. If the client Web browser is already running, pdweb uses the existing browser window. The Web browser is pointed to the Peripheral Device Tool login screen.

The pdweb command normally starts both the pdweb server and client components, however, it can also be used with the -s option to start or stop the pdweb server component without starting a client Web browser.

Refer to the pdweb(1M) manual page for a detailed description of the command line options.

Using SCM

One of the ways you can access the Peripheral Device Tool is by using Servicecontrol Manager (SCM) version 3.0 and greater. You can access the SCM graphical user interface from any system on the network using a Web browser connected to the intranet.

IMPORTANT: Be sure to configure the pdweb autostart port (1110) with waconf(1M) before attempting to access the Peripheral Device Tool from SCM or Partition Manager.

To log on to the SCM graphical user interface:

  1. Open a Web browser on any network client that is connected to your company intranet.

  2. Access the log on screen by navigating to https://hostname:50000/ where hostname is the hostname of the SCM central management server (CMS).

  3. Enter your User name and Password.

  4. Click [Log On].

  5. From the Nodes tab menu, select All Nodes to load the nodes list in the workspace.

    To narrow the list of nodes displayed in the nodes list, select a node group from the Nodes tab menu instead of All Nodes if appropriate.

  6. Select the target system (node) using the adjacent check box.

    The Tools tab menu replaces the Nodes tab menu after you select the target system (node).

  7. From the Tools tab menu, expand the appropriate tool category and select the Peripheral Device Tool (pdweb).

    The Peripheral Device Tool launches in the workspace and you are ready to use the tool.

    NOTE: If the Peripheral Device Tool is not displayed, then it is not installed or you do not have the necessary permissions to access this tool. You should contact the administrator of the SCM central management server to resolve the problem. The pdweb tool definition file can be found in /opt/hpwebadmin/htdocs/pdweb/scm/pdweb.xml.

    For more information regarding the SCM product, refer to the HP Servicecontrol Manager documentation, available at http://www.docs.hp.com.

Using SAM

One of the ways you can access the Peripheral Device Tool is by using SAM.

NOTE: Be sure that SAM is installed on your system. If SAM is not installed, refer to Software Distributor Administration Guide for HP-UX 11i B2355-90754 to add SAM to your host system configuration.

To access the Peripheral Device Tool using SAM:

  1. Log in to the host system as root, or as a user with superuser capability.

  2. Enter /usr/sbin/sam to start SAM.

  3. From the SAM Areas screen, select Peripheral Devices.

  4. From the Peripheral Devices screen, select the Cards and Devices icon.

The Peripheral Device Tool appears and you are ready to use the tool.

NOTE: If you are using SAM's X interface, then SAM attempts to use an existing Mozilla browser on the display. If there is none, SAM starts Mozilla on the display. Starting Mozilla can take several seconds.

If you are using SAM's terminal interface, the pdweb server is started and you can copy and paste the URL for Peripheral Device Tool into any browser.
