The Personal Toolbox provides a container for applications and
utilities you use frequently.
The personal toolbox contains:
Several actions from the General Toolbox that you may want to use
frequently.
Actions you have placed there.
Other actions provided by your system administrator.
You can customize the contents of your Personal Toolbox. You can
add tools, remove tools, and organize the contents by creating subdirectories.
“Starting Applications or Utilities”, earlier in this chapter, explains how to start actions.
Opening the Personal Toolbox
Choose the Tools control in the Front Panel.
Or, choose Personal in the Tools subpanel.
Adding a Subdirectory to the Personal Toolbox
Subdirectories are useful for organizing toolbox contents.
Choose "New" from the "Directory" menu.
In the "Personal Toolbox - New Directory" dialog box, enter a name into the
"New Directory Name" field.
Choose OK or press Enter.
A new toolbox icon appears with the name you chose.
Making a Personal Action More Readily Available
If you use a personal action frequently, you can put it in a location
that's more convenient.
Put the action icon on your Desktop.
For more detail, see “Putting an Object on the Desktop”.
Or, add the action to your Front Panel. For information on
adding controls that start actions to the Front Panel, see HP VUE's
online help (click the Help Manager control, then click "HP
Visual User Environment, Version 3.0", then click "Front Panel and
Workspace Manager", then click "Configuring the Front Panel").
Or, copy (press and hold Ctrl while you drag) the action
icon to a directory where you
using it frequently.
You may find it helpful to copy action icons to directories containing
application data.
If the action takes a data file, you can drop the data file icon on
the action icon to start the application.
If the action prompts for data when double-clicked, you can supply a
file name (without the entire path). The action assumes the data file is
located in the same directory as the action icon.
Copying a General Or Network Action to the Personal Toolbox
If you frequently use an action that's located in the general or
network toolboxes, you can copy it to your personal toolbox.
Drop the action icon on the Tools control in the Front Panel.
Or, open both the Personal toolbox and the toolbox containing
the icon. Copy (press and hold Ctrl while you drag) the
action icon to the Personal Toolbox.
Adding an Application to the Personal Toolbox
The following procedure describes how to use Create Action to create
basic actions for starting applications.
For information on additional features of Create Action, see HP VUE's
online help (click the Help Manager control, then click "HP Visual
User Environment, Version 3.0", then click "General Configuration",
then click "Actions and Filetypes").
If you have not already done so, install the application on your
system.
Determine what command line you would type to start the application
from a terminal window (for example, IslandDraw picture.drw).
Double-click the CreateAction icon in the Utilities subdirectory
of the General Toolbox. The Create Action dialog box is displayed.
Supply Required Information. In the "Name" field, type a unique name for the action. This name will
be the label for the action icon.
In the "Command Line" field, type the command that would start the application.
If the command takes a data file, substitute $n
for each argument, where n is 1 for the first data file, 2 for the
second, etc. (Example: Wingz $1.)
Use the "Window Type" options menu to select how the action's output will
be displayed:
- X Windows:
The application creates its own window.
- No Output:
The command has no display output.
- Terminal:
The application runs in an HP VUE terminal window.
The window remains open until you close it.
- Terminal (auto-close):
The application runs in an HP VUE terminal
window that closes automatically when you exit the application.
If you aren't sure which option to select, leave it set to the default
(Terminal).
Supply a Prompt for a File. If the command takes a data file (the command line contains $1), type the text of the prompt into the "Filename Prompt" field. This prompt is displayed when the action displays a dialog box requiring you to enter a file name.
Supply Optional Information. If you have special icons for the action, type the file names in the
"Large Icon" and "Small Icon" fields. (Supply the full path name if the
icons are not located in the /usr/vue/icons directory.) These
icons are used for the action in the toolbox. If you do not have a special icon, a default icon is used.
In the "Description" field, type any help information for the action. This help is displayed when you select the action and press f1.
Press Enter to wrap text to the next line in the text box.
Store the Action. Choose Apply.
The action definition is put in a new configuration file. A
dialog box tells you the location of the new configuration file.
Do not close this dialog box until you have tested the action as
described below. An icon for the action will appear in your Personal Toolbox.
Test the Action. Double-click the action icon. If it doesn't work
properly, edit the fields in the Create Action dialog and Apply your
changes.
When you are satisfied that the action is working properly, choose Close in the Create Action dialog.
If the application is located on another system, you could run the
application by using a command (see “Running a Command Remotely with remsh”).
However, HP VUE actions provide a more convenient way to start
applications on other systems. “Configuring Actions to Run Remote Applications ” covers creating actions for
applications located on other systems.
For step-by-step examples for creating actions, see HP VUE's online
help (click the Help Manager control, then click "HP Visual User
Environment, Version 3.0", then click "General Configuration", then
click "Actions and Filetypes", then click "Creating a Simple Action",
then click "Example: Creating an action for an application").
Removing an Action from the Personal Toolbox
Drop the action's icon on the Trash Can.
Or, select the action icon, then choose "Delete to Trash" from the
File menu.
Or, choose "Delete to Trash" from the
icon's popup menu.
