You can use HP VUE actions to run applications or programs on remote computers. HP VUE actions provide "network transparency," which means that you can run applications and use data on remote systems as if you were using your local system.

  • An action defined on your local system can run an application on a remote system or application server, which contains the data files for the application.

  • An action can use data located on a remote file server. For example, an action defined on your local system can use data from another remote system.

  • An action can be defined remotely and used just as though it were defined on your system. Thus, you can use a host in your network as an action server.

Configuring Actions to Run Remote Applications

To allow a local action to run a remote application:

  • The local and remote systems must be properly configured.

  • The action must be written to invoke the application on the desired host. You must create the action manually by editing a .vf file; you cannot use the Create Action utility.

For more information about configuring systems, and about creating and running HP VUE actions remotely, see HP VUE's online help (click the Help Manager control, then click "HP Visual User Environment Version 3.0 Help", then click "General Configuration", then click "Network Configuration for HP VUE", then click "Using Actions to Run Remote Applications").

If you do not want to create a remote HP VUE action, you can still run a remote application from the command line. See “Running a Command Remotely with remsh”.
