There are some things that you as an application programmer can do to maximize the performance of the display list you create. These things include:

  • Avoid the use of large numbers of small segments. The segment-calling overhead can add up if there are excessive levels in the hierarchy.

  • To avoid any remaining display list traversal after selecting a hit during picking, include PK_STOP in the value of 〈pick_control〉.

  • If significant amounts of the graphical output is outside the clip limits, display list traversal speed is increased by using adaptive clipping, pruning, and/or culling.

  • Use filters, name sets, segment control, and element control wherever applicable; they help minimize the number of elements processed.

  • Allocate memory with respect to display list size needs using the dl_control function code, SET_MEMORY_ALLOC_SIZES. This function code allows for tuning of initial display list memory allocation as well as dynamically tuning subsequent allocations due to display list growth.
