The manual relevant to Display List is the one you're now reading: the Starbase Display List Programmer's Manual. This manual describes the Starbase Display List product. The manual is organized in the following way:

  • Tutorial: This describes in detail how to use the Display List commands and what they are useful for. The chapter organization is as follows:

    • Chapter 1: Introduction to Display List — This chapter introduces you to the concepts related to display lists, discusses why you might want to use a display list, and gives a simple example using some Display List commands.

    • Chapter 2: Functional Review — This chapter contains references to all the Starbase Display List routines, along with short descriptions of what they do. It is most useful for those who are familiar with other display list products, and who want to get an overview of the Starbase Display List.

    • Chapter 3: Terminology — In order to converse fluently about Display List, one must be familiar with the pertinent jargon. This chapter defines the necessary words and concepts in order to make the discussions in subsequent chapters understandable.

    • Chapter 4: The Basics of Using a Display List — This chapter gets into detail about the various options available with opening and closing display lists and segments.

    • Chapter 5: Displaying and Refreshing — This chapter discusses device-dependence and device-independence in the context of a display list. Also covered are the differences between "displaying" a display list and "refreshing" it, and some basic control of the display list traversal.

    • Chapter 6: Segment Networks — This chapter enumerates and describes the Display List routines that are involved in a segment network; i.e., a set of two or more display list segments, arranged such that one segment "calls" another.

    • Chapter 7: Display List Editing — In this chapter, display list editing is discussed: inserting, deleting, replacing, labelling and inquiring display list elements, as well as renaming, deleting, and copying segments. Also covered in traversal control.

    • Chapter 8: Filters — This chapter shows how to use Display List's invisibility, pick, and highlighting filters, which permit selective display, picking, and highlighting, respectively.

    • Chapter 9: Picking — This chapter talks about using input devices with a program that uses the Display List.

    • Chapter 10: Miscellaneous Topics — Here is where those "other" topics—the ones that don't fit into any previous chapter—are discussed.

    • Chapter 11: Display List Device Driver — This chapter talks about the creation and manipulation of a display list independent of any graphics hardware device.

    • Appendix A — A quick-reference for all of the Display List procedures and their parameters.

    • Appendix B — This appendix lists some "special considerations"—those characteristics of Display List that are not intuitively obvious, but may be important to your application.

    • Glossary — A mini-dictionary of Display List-related terms.

  • The Display List Device Driver — This section discusses the device driver available for Display List use, and when it is required.

  • The Display List Reference — The ``man'' pages concerning the Display List routines.
