HP/PAK consists of two tools that help you analyze the performance of your applications.

  • XPS (X Window System-based view of process statistics) looks at the relative use of resources by processes at the system level.

  • Puma looks at the performance of a given program at the library, procedure, and statement level.

Puma has three user interfaces:

  • The graphical user interface, based on the conventions of OSF/Motif, is useful for interactive collection and analysis of program performance data.

  • The command-line user interface is useful for collecting or analyzing data in a non-interactive way, such as remotely or in the background.

  • The "script" interface is a special command-line interface that lets you execute a single Puma command from the shell or a shell script without actually invoking the tool.

The following sections show you how to start up and perform some simple tasks with XPS and Puma, using a simple program that is supplied with HP/PAK.
