Puma is an interactive tool that looks at the performance of programs at the level of libraries, procedures, and statements. For statement-level information, the target program must be compiled with the compiler's debugging option (-g).

This chapter describes how Puma gathers performance data on a program. Read this chapter to understand how Puma works; read Chapter 2 to find out how to use Puma.
