The Puma command-line interface allows you to perform all the data-collection activities available with the graphical interface, including invoking a program, attaching to an executing program, or attaching to the next run of a program. You can also kill the data collection and the target process before completion. However, unlike the graphical interface, the command-line interface does not permit you to stop data collection without killing the target program.

The analysis capabilities of the Puma command-line interface are more limited than those of the graphical interface.

You can use command-line Puma to:

  • Generate a tabular report of performance metrics comparable to the Call Tree analysis (Textual) window

  • Distinguish program threads and cause source line numbers to be displayed

You cannot use command-line Puma to:

  • Generate line graphs of resource use over time

  • Generate bar graphs of metrics by routine or statement

  • Display source code

  • Play back program execution

You might, however, wish to use command-line Puma to generate a datafile and then use Puma's graphical interface to analyze the data in that file.
