This section has information to help you set up your system for efficient storage management. For additional information on system setup tasks, see the Volume Manager Storage Administrator Administrator's Guide.

The following system setup sequence is typical and should be used as an example. Your system requirements may differ. The system setup guidelines provide helpful information for specific setup configurations.

Example System Setup Sequence

The following list describes typical activities you can use when setting up your storage management system.

Initial Setup

  1. Place disks under Volume Manager control.

  2. Create new disk groups (if you do not want to use rootdg or you want other disk groups).

  3. Create volumes.

  4. Put file system(s) in volumes.

Options

  • Designate hot-relocation spare disks.

  • Add mirrors to volumes if necessary.

Maintenance

  • Resize volumes and file systems.

  • Add more disks/disk groups.

  • Create snapshots.
