Document Structure

Chapter 2 “WLM quick start: the essentials for using WLM” provides an overview of the techniques and tools available for using WLM. It serves as a condensed version of the user’s guide, introducing you to the essentials and allowing you to get started using WLM.

Chapter 3 “How WLM manages workloads” describes how WLM manages workloads through service-level objectives (SLOs). It discusses WLM’s two types of SLOs: shares-based and goal-based SLOs.

Chapter 4 “How do I use WLM?” discusses the basic steps you need to take to use WLM. The remainder of the chapters in the book discuss these steps in detail.

Chapter 5 “Configuring WLM” explains how to configure WLM. It describes the WLM configuration file and the general syntactic conventions to use, and it explains how to define the various WLM components. This chapter also explains how to use the WLM graphical user interface to configure WLM and how to activate the configuration file so that WLM manages the system.

Chapter 6 “Auditing and billing” describes WLM auditing and billing. It explains how to enable WLM to audit data and how you can display that data.

Chapter 7 “Managing SLOs across partitions” describes how WLM manages SLOs across virtual partitions and nPartitions and explains how to configure cross-partition management.

Chapter 8 “Management of nested nPars / vPars / workload groups” explains how to manage nested workloads.

Chapter 9 “Example configuration files” presents example configuration files that are available from WLM directories. These examples show how to use the syntax discussed in Chapter 5 “Configuring WLM”.

Chapter 10 “Monitoring SLO compliance and WLM” explains how to monitor WLM SLO compliance and other information.

Appendix A “WLM command reference” is a command reference, describing the functions, syntax, and arguments for each WLM command.

Appendix B “WLM configuration file
syntax overview” is a quick reference for the WLM configuration file syntax, indicating the required and optional components.

Appendix C “HP-UX command and system call support” lists standard HP-UX commands and system calls that support WLM workload groups and allow you to use WLM more efficiently. These commands are not shipped as part of the WLM product.

Appendix D “Integration with other products” describes how WLM integrates with other products to provide better functionality.

Appendix E “Useful PRM utilities” lists PRM utilities that WLM users may find helpful. These utilities are helpful only when the WLM configuration includes a prm structure. For additional information, see the manpages or to the Process Resource Manager User’s Guide (available in /opt/prm/doc/).

Appendix F “Understanding how PRM manages resources” describes how PRM manages resources. This appendix is provided as background information, given that WLM uses some of PRM resource management concepts and tools.

Appendix G “Migrating from PRM to WLM” explains how to convert PRM configuration files to WLM configuration files if you want to migrate from PRM to WLM.

Appendix H “Advanced WLM usage: Using performance metrics” explains advanced WLM usage pertaining to metric goals and collecting performance data.

The “Glossary” defines key terms used in this document.
