NAME
vxinstall — menu driven Volume Manager initial configuration procedure
DESCRIPTION
The
vxinstall
utility provides a menu driven
interface to configure the VERITAS Volume Manager (VxVM).
After you install the Volume Manager software package, run
vxinstall
to configure Volume Manager for initial use on your system.
You can use the files
/etc/vx/cntrls.exclude
and
/etc/vx/disks.exclude
to automatically exclude controllers or disks from use by
vxinstall
so that these devices are not configured as VM devices.
/etc/vx/cntrls.exclude
must specify the address of a controller to exclude,
for example,
c2.
Each line of
/etc/vx/disks.exclude
must specify the address of a disk to exclude,
for example,
c0t3d0.
OPERATIONS
- Type of Installation
vxinstall
next displays a list of installation options:

- Quick Installation
Installs all disks not listed in the file
/etc/vx/disks.exclude.
Disks under Logical Volume Manager (LVM) control,
or recognized as whole disk file systems, are also excluded.
You are prompted
whether to include or exclude all disks, on a
controller-by-controller basis, from VxVM control.
- Custom Installation
For a custom installation,
vxinstall
displays a list of
controllers and
disks.
You can select each disk that you want
to put under Volume Manager control
and select among several other options,
such as whether to encapsulate the disk.
- List of controllers
vxinstall
lists all controllers found on the system.
- List of disks
vxinstall
lists all disks for each controller.
LVM disks do not need to be listed in the
/etc/vx/disks.exclude
file,
they are automatically excluded from consideration
(see
vxvmconvert(1M)
for information on how to bring an existing
LVM disk under VxVM control).
After receiving an acknowledgement,
vxinstall
provides several options regarding how to
bring the disks under Volume Manager control.
- Commit changes
vxinstall
displays a list of disks to be brought under Volume Manager
control and prompts you for a confirmation.
