You are encouraged to read through this page entirely before installing and running this product. Additionally, you should review the list of known issues for this release. If you have any problems downloading or installing Ximian GNOME 1.4 for HP-UX, please check the Frequently Asked Questions to see if there is a known solution to your problem. Before you install
To install Ximian GNOME 1.4 for HP-UX, you must be able to login as root at the console login prompt, so be sure that you know the root password. Installation of this release of Ximian GNOME for HP-UX may be adversely affected by the existence of a previous installation of any version of GNOME. In Step 5 of the installation process, we recommend that you remove any existing GNOME installation, including users' $HOME/.gnome directories. This removes any custom application launchers that users have added to their panels. You may want to make a note of any application launchers that you plan to re-create after you have installed the new release. To see how an existing application launcher is defined, right-click on the icon in the panel, and select Properties. Use the following process to install the Ximian GNOME 1.4 for HP-UX product. Step 1. Verify your system configuration.
Make sure that your workstation meets or exceeds the recommended minimum system configuration listed on the Specifications page. Also, be sure to check your available disk space against the installation requirements of the depots that you plan to install. Step 2. Download the product depots.
Download the appropriate appropriate product depot(s) from the Get the Software page. Step 3. Backup your system.
It is always a good idea to backup your current system configuration before installing new software. Step 4. Start up a console login.
If you are currently running under CDE, you can skip this step. If you are running under a previous installation of GNOME, including Ximian GNOME 1.2 or a previous download of Ximian GNOME 1.4, then you must exit GNOME and go to a console login. Log out of GNOME. This will take you back to the gdm login screen. If the previously installed version of GNOME is Ximian GNOME 1.4, then select System then Console Login from the pull-down menu. If the previously installed version of GNOME is Ximian GNOME 1.2, then select System then Reboot... from the pull-down menu. In Ximian GNOME 1.2, this does not actually reboot the system, it simply goes to the console login. Click [Yes]. Login as root.
Step 5. Remove any previous installation of GNOME.
If you have not installed any previous version of GNOME, you can skip this step. In order to ensure a clean installation of Ximian GNOME 1.4 for HP-UX, HP recommends that you remove any existing GNOME installation. To remove a previous installation of Ximian GNOME for HP-UX, you need to identify the product bundles that were installed, and use the swremove command to remove them. Execute the following commands to list the product bundles that previously installed GNOME and the GTK+ libraries.
swlist | grep -i gnome
swlist | grep -i gtk
Note the product bundle names. For Ximian GNOME 1.2 for HP-UX, these will include B6852AA and B6848AB. For a previous installation of Ximian GNOME 1.4, the product bundle names will include B6852BA and B6848BA. If you previously installed the source code or development bundles, those product bundle names are also be shown. To remove the previously installed product bundles, execute the following command, substituting your product bundle names for those given.
swremove B6852AA B6848AB
To ensure a clean installation, you should also remove the previously installed GNOME directories, by executing the command:
rm -rf /opt/gnome /etc/opt/gnome /var/opt/gnome
If the previous installation was Ximian GNOME 1.2, we recommend that your users should also remove the following directories, if they exist, containing their GNOME preferences and customizations. This should be done before logging into GNOME for the first time, to ensure proper configuration of Ximian GNOME 1.4. The first time the user logs into GNOME, these directories will be recreated and initialized for Ximian GNOME 1.4.
$HOME/.gconf
$HOME/.gconfd
$HOME/.gnome
$HOME/.gnome-desktop
$HOME/.gnome-help-browser
$HOME/.gnome_private
$HOME/.gtkrc
$HOME/.nautilus
$HOME/.sawfish
$HOME/.xscreensaver
|
Step 6. Use swinstall to install the depots.
Make sure that you are logged in with root permissions. Install the depots using the Software Distributor swinstall utility. If you are installing more than one depot, you can install all the depots at once, or install them separately. If you install the depots separately, you must install the following depot first:
B6852BA+B6848BA-r2-PA_11.X.depot
for PA-RISC systems; or for Itanium®-based[1]:
B6852BA+B6848BA-r1-IPF_11.X.depot
Each of these depots includes both the Ximian GNOME desktop and the GTK+ libraries. For most users, the following command will install everything that you need for PA-RISC systems:
swinstall -x mount_all_filesystems=false -s /path.../B6852BA+B6848BA-r2-PA_11.X.depot \*
or for Itanium®-based:
swinstall -x mount_all_filesystems=false -s /path.../B6852BA+B6848BA-r1-IPF_11.X.depot \*
where /path.../ is the path to the directory containing the depot files. Step 7. Stop the running CDE processes.
This step is only necessary if you are still running under CDE. If CDE is not running, and you are already at a console login, you can skip this step. Before you start the GNOME login manager, the running CDE applications and the CDE login manager must be stopped. The following command will terminate all CDE sessions, both local and remote. Applications that were started under CDE will also be terminated. Close all open applications before continuing. When you are ready to terminate CDE, execute the following command:
/sbin/init.d/dtlogin.rc stop
At the command line login prompt, login as root. Step 8. Select the GNOME display manager.
To establish the GNOME login manager (gdm) as the default desktop login manager, edit the following file:
/etc/rc.config.d/desktop
and change the line:
DESKTOP=CDE
to
DESKTOP=GNOME
If there are any other lines in this file, leave them untouched. As an alternative to editing the file by hand, you can use the following command to make the change:
/usr/sbin/ch_rc -ap DESKTOP=GNOME /etc/rc.config.d/desktop
Now, start gdm by executing the following command:
/sbin/init.d/gdm.rc start
If you get a message saying that gdm is already running, use the following sequence of commands:
/sbin/init.d/gdm.rc stop
/sbin/init.d/gdm.rc start
At the gdm login screen, enter your user name and password. Your GNOME environment will be initialized, and the GNOME desktop launch. Step 9. Verify correct operation on system startup.
Reboot your system to verify that gdm starts up as the default login manager. To reboot your system, close all applications and logout of GNOME. At the GNOME login screen, select System then Reboot... from the pull-down menu. Whenever you login, the GNOME login manager (gdm) allows you to select either CDE or GNOME as your desktop. To make a selection, choose either GNOME or CDE from the Session pull-down menu, then enter your user name and password. If you don't make any selection, gdm will run your default desktop. When you first install Ximian GNOME for HP-UX, GNOME will be set up as your default desktop. Whenever you use the Sessionpull-down menu to select a desktop different than your default, gdmwill ask you if you want to change your default to the desktop that you have just selected. Click [Yes] to change your default desktop, or click [No] to keep your default desktop unchanged. In either case, the GNOME login manager (gdm) will continue to manage the login screen. If you want to switch back to the CDE login manager, execute the following commands as root from the console login.
/usr/dt/bin/dtconfig -e
/sbin/init.d/gdm.rc stop
/sbin/init.d/dtlogin.rc start
