There is a problem with the esd sound daemon on older workstations. Sound may initially work, but at some point the daemon may become unresponsive. This will cause a flood of error messages to be logged to /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log, which can eventually fill up the available space on the /var filesystem.
It is necessary to reboot the workstation if this problem occurs. HP recommends that users of the following affected workstations should disable sound in GNOME. To do this, open the GNOME Control Center then select Sound from the Multimedia menu. Select the General tab and uncheck the option labeled:
Enable sound server startup
Restart GNOME to disable the esd sound daemon.
The following HP workstations are known to be affected by this problem.
B class workstations earlier than the B1000
C class workstations earlier than the C3000
J class workstations earlier than the J5000
Some HPsystems do not support local graphics and therefore are not able to execute an X server. In addition, some systems might be capable of local graphics, but are not properly configured to execute an X server. In either situation, when gdm starts up, it will attempt to start a local X server, which will fail. You must manually configure gdm to disable local X server startup, or reconfigure your X server to start properly.
Perform the following steps to manually configure gdm.
Edit the /etc/opt/gnome/gdm/gdm.conf file.
In the [servers] section of the file, comment out all lines containing the following text. (To comment out a line, place the character '#' at the start of the line.)
/usr/bin/X11/X
The following Itanium®-based[1] systems do not have support for local graphics and must have the X server startup disabled.
HP Server rx4610
HP Workstation i2000
HP Server rx9610
Nautilus starts up slowly on older systems. You have the option of using gmc as the desktop file manager, instead of Nautilus. See the Frequently Asked Questions for information about switching between gmcand Nautilus.
Session management has been improved since GNOME 1.2, but not all details of your workspace configuration can be saved and restored.
Internationalization is not complete in this release.
Graphing does not work in gnumeric, because the program guppi is not included in the Ximian GNOME for HP-UX product.
CD audio is only accessible through XMMSor the CD player if the user has rootpermissions.
Multiple-screen configurations, including Single Logical Screen (SLS), have not been tested to work with this release.
The following configuration file:
/etc/opt/gnome/gdm/gdm.conf
Contains references to files that do not exist on HP-UX (for example, XFree86 components). This does not cause any problem. There is no need to remove these references from the file.
