The Messenger service does not have to be running for you to send a mes sage. However, it must be running for your workstation to receive messages. You can send a message to an alias on the network or to a domain. An alias is a unique name that each user specifies. A workstation can have three kinds of aliases:
A username does not necessarily become an alias when a user logs on to the network. This is because an alias must be unique on the network, but a user can be logged on at more than one workstation at a time. If a user logs on at several workstations, the username becomes an alias only at the first work station where the user logs on. A domain name is used like an alias for sending messages to a domain. All the workstations and servers that specify a domain as their workstation domain receive messages sent to the domain name. To send a message
