This section lists the remaining available leaf objects, explains what each is used for, and indicates when to use each.

Table C-5 Miscellaneous Leaf Object Name, Function, and Usage

Leaf Object

Function

Usage Situation

Alias

Points to another object in the Directory tree and makes it appear as if that object actually exists in the Directory tree where the Alias object is.

Although an object appears both where it was actually created and where an Alias referring to it was created, only one copy of the object really exists.

If you delete or rename an Alias, the Alias itself (not the object it is pointing to) is deleted or renamed.

You want to allow access to an object that is in another context.

For example, you can use an Alias to represent a resource, such as a special printer, that most users in the tree need to access.

Bindery Object

Represents an object placed in the Directory tree by an upgrade or migration utility.

It is used by NDS only to provide backward compatibility with bindery-based utilities.

Bindery Queue

Represents a queue placed in the Directory tree by an upgrade or migration utility.

It is used by NDS only to provide backward compatibility with bindery-based utilities.

Unknown

Represents an NDS object that has been invalidated and cannot be identified as belonging to any of the other object classes.

Directory Services utilities rename objects that they do not recognize. Delete or re-create the correct object for the resource.
