Before you install NetWare 4.1, do the following:

  1. Plan and design NDS tree. In addition to the installation steps outlined in this chapter, NetWare 4.1 requires a design step prior to installing the product. These steps include: creating a naming standard for NDS objects, designing the NDS tree, designing partitions and determining replication placements, and implementing time synchronization.

For detailed information about NetWare Directory Services, refer to the Introduction to NetWare Directory Services manual.

  2. Back up the entire system.

  3. Verify that you have the software and hardware required for the product as described below:

    • HP 9000 workstation family (Series 700) system or server family (Series 800) system.

    • Operating system: HP-UX 10.10 or 10.20.

    • Your HP-UX system must be configured to support long file names to use NetWare 9000.

    • Minimum of 32 megabytes of RAM.

    • Disk drive with at least 128 megabytes of free space.

    • A LAN link, such as LAN/9000 or Token Ring/9000, installed and configured.

    • DOS workstation that can be set up as NetWare client. Minimum requirements: 640 KB memory, DOS 3.0 or greater, high-density floppy diskette drive (3.5 inch).

    • For token ring networks, the Token Ring/9000 product must be installed and configured. For series 800, use product number J2166A. For series 700, use product number J2165A. For non-EISA model 712, use product number A4011B.

If the NetWare client PCs are on a token ring segment, the NetWare client shells must be configured to support token ring.

  4. Determine your network environment:

    • If you do not have a previous version of NetWare/9000 already installed, continue to, Step 2: Install NetWare 4.1 on a New Server, in this chapter.

    • If you are upgrading NetWare 3.12 to 4.1, for example, you have NetWare 3.12 on HP-UX 10.x and are moving your NetWare environment to NetWare 4.1 on a system running HP-UX 10.0x, skip this chapter and go to chapter 2.

  5. Obtain your license codeword. Refer to Chapter 4, "License Codeword" for more information.

  6. Go to the next section, "Step 2: Install NetWare 4.1 on a New Server."
