NOTE: If you have an earlier version of NetWare for HP-UX installed on your system, please read these instructions carefully. You risk SIGNIFICANT DATA LOSS if you do not perform the steps below accurately and in the proper sequence.

Overview of MIGRATE.EXE

A Novell client migration utility (MIGRATE.EXE) is shipped on a floppy disk with this product. This utility is required to migrate the NetWare 3.1x bindery and trustee databases to NetWare 4.10 Directory Services (NDS).

MIGRATE.EXE runs from a client PC and must be run twice to complete the migration. It must be run first while your 3.1x server is still up and running, to collect and store bindery and trustee data. Thus, running MIGRATE.EXE is the first step in migrating your system to NetWare 4.10. After NetWare 4.10 and NDS are installed, you must run MIGRATE.EXE a second time to transfer the data to the new environment.

Use of MIGRATE.EXE is enforced by swinstall. Because failure to use MIGRATE.EXE would cause loss of all data stored in the bindery and trustee databases, such as user and group records, trustee assignments, and file and directory restrictions, the NetWare 4.10 installation program will abort itself if it detects that both a previous version of NetWare exists on your system and that MIGRATE.EXE has not been run.

MIGRATE.EXE Steps

The following steps, explained in detail below, summarize the procedure to collect and store bindery and trustee data on your 3.1x server.

  1. Unpack the migration utility onto the PC.

    1. Insert the NetWare/9000 Client Utility Disk, which was shipped with the NetWare/9000 into the PC

    2. On the PC, create a directory for the migration utility, such as C:\MIGRATE.

    3. Change to that directory and, assuming the floppy is in drive A:, enter:

      C:\MIGRATE>a:mig_unpk

  2. From an HP 9000 log in to the 3.1x host system as root and ensure that the NetWare 3.1x server is up and that other users are not logged in to the system using the userlist or conndata utilites. The network_trash_folder is not used in NetWare 4.1 Therefore, to avoid unnecessary error messages when you migrate, remove this directory from the SYS volume.

    cd sys_volume_path

    rm -fr network_trash_folder

  3. From the PC, log in to the 3.1x server as SUPERVISOR using the syntax:

    login server_name/supervisor /b

  4. On the PC, change (cd) to the directory where MIGRATE.EXE is located.

  5. On the PC, start the MIGRATE utility by running the command:

    MIGRATE

  6. On the PC, at the "Select the type of migration" window, select:

    Same-Server migration.

  7. On the PC, at the "Select the source LAN type" window, select:

    Netware 3.x

  8. On the PC, at the "Select destination LAN type" window, select:

    Netware 4.x

  9. On the PC, set the working directory to the top level of the SYS volume of the 3.1x server.

To do so, at the prompt, "Working directory," press: [Enter]

A data-entry box appears with the heading "Specify the full working directory path."

If necessary, use [Backspace] to erase the default entry and then enter the server name and the SYS volume in the format:

    servername\SYS:

  10. On the PC, the setting for "Error/warning action" is optional. Errors and warnings will be written to the file MIGxxx.RPT in the SYS volume of the server. You will be able to view this file later using the Migration Utility.

  11. On the PC, at the "Define the NetWare 3.x source server" section, press [Enter] at the "Server" field to select a list of servers.

Then press [Enter] again to select the name of your server.

  12. On the PC, at the "Information to migrate" field, use the arrow keys and [F5] to select each item EXCEPT "All information" and "Print queues and print server." Printer migration is not supported. Press [Enter] when done.

  13. On the PC, back at the previous screen, at the "Source volumes to migrate" field, use the arrow keys and [F5] to select all the volumes on your 3.1x server. Press [Enter] when done.

  14. The section of the utility with the heading "Define the NetWare 4.x destination server" cannot be completed until you have set up the new 4.1 server online.

To start the migration, press [F10] and select "Migrate to the working directory."

The Migration Utility will now create the records it needs to migrate your 3.1x data to 4.1. This may take a few minutes for small volumes and about 30 minutes for large volumes (over 25,000 files and directories).

  15. When the procedure is completed, press [Enter] to exit the migration utility and logout from the 3.1x server.

CAUTION: MIGRATE.EXE creates a configuration file on the PC called MIGRATE.CFG. Make a backup copy of this MIGRATE.CFG file in another directory, on a floppy disk, or on another server, because if the file is lost or damaged, you will not be able to complete the migration.
  16. On the server, shutdown HP-UX 3.1x for the last time using the command:

    stopnw

    stopnps

  17. Continue to "Step 3: Upgrade Your System."
