Before completing this step, you should have a fairly complete plan for configuring your NDS tree. For assistance, refer to the manual shipped with NetWare 4.1/9000: Introduction to NetWare Directory Services.

Set the NDS Bindery Context on the new system such that it is identical to the value you intend to use for your Organization Name in dsinstall (in Step 8, below). Use SAM or nwcm:

nwcm -s ds_bindery_context= "o=organization_name"

Note: the double quotes around organization name ("O=...") must be included in this command.

NOTE: The instructions below contain the steps to install your server into a single existing tree. If this server is the first server in a new NDS tree or you need to add a server to a tree from multiple trees, follow the instructions in "Install Server into a New Tree" or "Install Server into an Existing Tree from Multiple Directory Trees" in chapter 5. Before you install NDS, you must start the NetWare 4.1 transport (startnps) and the NetWare 4.1 server (startnw).

Complete these steps to install the NetWare 4.1/9000 Server into a single existing tree.

Procedure

  1. Log in to your system as root and execute the command: dsinstall.

  2. Select "Install Directory Services onto this Server" and press <Enter>.

If the prompt "Install into tree <TREENAME>" appears, continue to step 3 below.

If not, follow the instructions for adding into a new tree or one of multiple trees in chapter 5.

CAUTION: Depending on its structure, the displayed Directory tree can be either a "simple" tree (only one level) or a "custom tree" (multilevel).
  3. Choose "Install into Tree <TREENAME> and press <Enter>. Note that the tree name must be entered in uppercase letters.

For help on rules for naming a Directory tree, press <F1>.

A screen appears with the cursor on the "Time server type" field.

  4. To enable time synchronization, you need to specify what type of time server category this server falls into.

The four server types are Single Reference, Reference, Primary, and Secondary. The default sets the first NetWare Services server in a Directory tree as a Single Reference server. All other servers default as Secondary servers. To select the default, press <Cntrl J>

  5. After setting up time synchronization, you will be prompted either for an Admin Password (Simple Directory Tree) or an Administrator Name prompt and a Password prompt (Custom Directory Tree).

    1. If the Admin Password prompt appears, type the administrator password and press <Enter>.

    2. If the Administrator Name and Password prompts appear, type in the information and press <Enter>. Go to step 6.

    3. If the Admin Password prompt appears and you want to customize the Directory tree, press <F4>, type the Administrator Name and press <Enter>, and type the Administrator Password and press <Enter>. Go to step 6.

  6. Specify the server's context (name context).

    1. In the " Company or Organization" field, type your company or organization name and press <Enter>.

    2. (Optional) In the "Level 1 (Sub)Organizational Unit" field, type an Organizational Unit name (such as a division or a department) and press <Enter>.

    3. (Optional) In the "Level 2 (Sub)Organizational Unit" field, type an additional Organizational Unit name and press <Enter>.

    4. (Optional) In the "Level 3 (Sub)Organizational Unit" field, type an additional Organizational Unit name and press <Enter>.

CAUTION: You can manually enter more than three levels of Organizational Units into the "Server Context" field. Make sure you enter a period (.) as a delimiter between the name entries.
  7. Record the administrator's name on the NetWare Services Installation Worksheet in Appendix A.

The default common name (CN) for the administrator of the first NetWare Services server in a Directory tree is ADMIN. The installation program creates this User object ADMIN directly under the Organization (O=) level.

  8. To save Directory information, press <Cntrl J>.

A message appears indicating that NetWare Directory Services is being installed.

  9. Review "How Does the Directory Tree Appear Now and "What Trustee Assignments Were Created During the Installation?" at the end of chapter 5.
