The following steps must be completed to finish the migration to NetWare 4.1.

  1. From the PC, login to the 4.1 server as SUPERVISOR using the syntax:

    login server_name/supervisor /b

If you are prompted for a password, use the password you assigned to ADMIN during dsinstall.

  2. On the PC, change (cd) to the directory where the MIGRATE.EXE program is located.

  3. On the PC, start the MIGRATE utility by running the command: MIGRATE.

  4. On the PC, at the "Select the type of migration" window, select:

    Same-Server migration.

  5. On the PC, at the "Select the source LAN type" window, select:

    Netware 3.x

  6. On the PC, at the "Select destination LAN type" window, select:

    Netware 4.x

  7. On the PC, in section 1, Configure the migration utility," check that the "Working directory" is set to

    SERVERNAME/SYS:

as specified in Step 2 above.

If the items displayed in section 2, "Define the Netware 3.x source server" are set to their default values ("Press <Enter> to select..."), then the MIGRATE utility did not locate the configuration file that you created when you first ran the MIGRATE utilty. Check that you are in the correct directory and that MIGRATE.CFG is also in the directory.

  8. On the PC, in section 3, "Define the Netware 4.x destination server"

    1. At the "Server" field, press [Enter] to select the server.

    2. At the "Volume destinations" field, press [Enter] to display the volumes. Use the arrow keys and [F5] to select all the volumes. Press [F10] to accept selections.

    3. At the "Passwords" field, press [Enter] to select whether to assign random passwords. Old passwords cannot be migrated. Make your selection based on the following.

      Option

      Result

      "Assign random password"

Each user is given an encoded password. The network administrator must then manually assign a password to each user using the netadmin or nwadmin utilities. The user can change the password with the client utility, setpass. This option is secure, but requires a major effort by the administrator.

      "Assign no passwords"

Each user account is migrated without a password. The administrator or the users can set passwords using the utilities mentioned above. This should be done as soon as possible after the new 4.1 server is first brought up.

You can control security in a NetWare environment through trustee assignments, without the use of passwords. In this case, you could use passwords to provide an additional level of security.

  9. On the PC, to begin the final procedure of the migration, press [F10] and select:

    Migrate from the Working Directory

    and press [Enter].

NOTE: If you did not remove the network_trash_folder as suggested earlier in "Step 2: Run MIGRATE.EXE," you will probably receive error messages about trustee data for the object servername\sys:\NETWORKT. You can ignore these messages. You will also be prompted whether to continue. Select "Yes" rather than "Ignore," in case other errors are encountered.

After the migration has completed, the following message will appear:

Migration from the working directory to the destination server is complete.

This completes the migration to the 4.1 product. Before you exit, the migration utility allows you to optionally inspect the report it created

  10. Run /opt/netware4/bin/migrate_ids. This utility ensures that the values for file ownership on the NetWare 4.1/9000 server are consistent with their original values from the NetWare 3.1x environment.

  11. Continue to "Step 8: Verify the Installation ."
