To install and configure a VLM client, obtain the Novell NetWare DOS/Windows VLM client kit version 1.2 or later and follow the instructions. The kit is contained in SYS:\PUBLIC\CLIENT\DOSWIN on your NetWare 9000 version 4.1 server. Instructions are contained in the README file in that directory. Consult the Novell World Wide Web page for updates and manuals: http://www.novell.com.

Packet Burst

Packet burst is set to active by default on DOS/Windows VLM client shells. For NetWare 9000, you may want to disable packet burst for better performance.

Hewlett-Packard's Fastpath technology provides greater performance improvements than packet burst and is more effective with packet burst disabled.

To disable packet burst on a VLM client, add the following to the client NET.CFG file.

netware dos requester pb buffers=0

There are known problems with "General Network Failures" when using packet burst. To avoid these errors, use the VLM version 1.2 client and add the following two lines to the NET.CFG file:

Protocol IPXODI
ipx retry count 50
