This section describes the requirements for installing version B.11.22.06 of the Gigabit Ethernet driver.

OS Platform and Version Compatibility

  • HP-UX 11i v1.6 operating system

Software Requirements

Required Patches

There are no patches for this version.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment, consult the safety information and user documentation provided with your computer before attempting the installation. Many computers are capable of producing energy levels that are considered hazardous. These computers are intended to be serviced by qualified personnel trained to deal with those hazards. Do not remove enclosures or attempt to bypass any interlocks that may be provided for the purpose of removing these hazardous conditions.

Hardware™ Requirements©

Gigabit Ethernet' is supported on the Itanium© 2 systems: rx5670 and rx2600 servers and zx6000 and zx2000 workstations.

Multiple add-on cards can be used on all supported systems, subject to the limitations of available card slots or the maximum number of cards supported by a particular system. See the configuration guide for your system for details or call your HP representative.

System Resource Requirements

  • Ensure you have at least 256 megabytes of memory per card.

  • HP does not recommend installing more cards than there are processors on your system.

Hardware and Software Installation Instructions

For instructions on how to install and configure the Gigabit Ethernet hardware and software, refer to the Quick Installation and Configuration Guide (see "Availability of Documentation").

To verify the driver (igelan) was loaded in the kernel, check the what(1) string by executing the following command:

Depending on interface, multiple peripheral devices can be connected to any interface card. However, because maximum device con nections are device- and platform-dependent, the following information represents basic guidelines only. For detailed information, contact an HP Customer Engineer or field of fice, which should have access to recent information published in the HP 9000 configuration and price guides. Limitations

Following are the limits of Gigabit Ethernet:

  • The following features are not supported in this release:

    • HP-UX VLAN (Virtual LAN)

    • HP APA (Auto-Port Aggregation)

    • Online Addition/Replacement (OLA/R)

  • When running 1000Base-T back-to-back at either 10 or 100 Mbps, you must use a crossover cable configuration. At 1000 Mbps, you can use either a crossover or straight-through cable.

  • 1000Base-T operates at 10, 100, or 1000 Mbps. Only full-duplex mode is supported at 1000 Mbps. Both full-duplex and half-duplex modes are supported at 10/100 Mbps. The 1000Base-T card and link partner (for example, a switch) must be set to autonegotiation to run at 1000 Mbps. Ensure that the settings of the card and its link partner are compatible, e.g. if the card is set to 100 Mbps full duplex, the link partner must also be set to 100 Mbps full duplex.

  • 1000Base-SX operates only at 1000 Mbps and only in full-duplex mode. It does not interoperate with the 100Base-FX card.

  • If using Jumbo Ethernet frames, ensure that all switches in the data path support the jumbo frame size and that both ends of the connection support jumbo frames. 1000Base-T supports jumbo frames only at 1000 Mbps.

  • The lanadmin -S option is not supported. The supported interface for setting speed is via the -X option.
