This section describes the requirements for installing versions B.11.00.07 and B.11.11.07 of the Gigabit Ethernet driver.

OS Platform and Version Compatibility

  • HP-UX 11.0 or HP-UX 11i, 64-bit operating system

Software Requirements

The following software are required in order to use Gigabit Ethernet on HP 9000 servers and workstations. You can check for a patch or product by running the swlist command as root.

HP-UX 11.0

  • HP-UX 11.0 Quality Pack (March 2002 or later)

  • PHNE_26250 (or later) — DLPI patch (must be installed before or along with the Gigabit Ethernet product)

  • PHCO_25902 (or later) — SAM support patch

  • March 2002 Application Release — support for APA (J4240AA)

Configuration-Specific Patches (for HP-UX 11.0)

  • PHKL_24729 or later — required on rp5400 (L class) and rp7400 (N class) systems that have more than 16 gigabytes of memory.

  • PHSS_25982 or later — required on any of the following workstations with more than 4 gigabytes of memory:

    • C3x00 (for example, C3000, C3600)

    • J5x00 (for example, J5000, J5600)

    • J7x00 (for example, J7000)

HP-UX 11i

  • HP-UX 11i Quality Pack (June 2002 or later)

  • PHNE_25642 or later — Transport patch (recommended for SR 8606218753)

  • PHSS_24106 or later — required for workstations J5x00 and above

  • PHCO_25870 or later — SAM support patch

  • March 2002 Application Release — support for APA (J4240AA)

Hardware Requirements

The following table lists supported HP 9000 systems:

Platforms

HP-UX Versions

rp5400 (L class), rp7400 (N class), and rp2400 series (A400 and higher) servers

11.0, 11i

SD (Superdome), rp7410, and rp8400 servers

11i

B1000 and higher, C3000 and higher, and J5000 and higher workstations

11.0, 11i

Multiple cards can be used on all supported systems, subject to the limitations of available card slots or the maximum number of cards supported by a particular system. See the configuration guide for your system for details. Note: On the HP server rp7410, a maximum of two A6794A cards is supported; however, for add-on cards, the standard requirements apply.

System Resource Requirements

  • Ensure you have at least 256 megabytes of memory per card.

  • HP does not recommend installing more cards than there are processors on your system.

Hardware and Software Installation Instructions

For instructions on how to install and configure the Gigabit Ethernet hardware and software, refer to the Quick Installation Guide (see “Availability of Documentation”).

To verify the driver (igelan) was loaded in the kernel, check the what(1) string by executing the following command:

what /stand/vmunix | grep igelan

You should see:

For HP-UX 11.0:

igelan_ilan Version: 1 Jun 20 2002
igelan Revision: B.11.00.07 Jun 20 2002

For HP-UX 11i:

igelan_ilan Version: 1 Jun 19 2002
igelan Revision: B.11.11.07 Jun 19 2002

Limitations

Following are the limits of Gigabit Ethernet:

  • The lanadmin -S option is not supported. The supported interface for setting speed is via the -X option.

  • When running 1000Base-T back-to-back at either 10 or 100 Mbps, you must use a crossover cable configuration. However, when running at 1000 Mbps, you can use either crossover or straight-through cables.

  • 1000Base-T operates at 10, 100, or 1000 Mbps. Only full-duplex mode is supported at 1000 Mbps. Both full-duplex and half-duplex modes are supported at 10/100 Mbps. The 1000Base-T card and link partner (for example, a switch) must be set to autonegotiation to run at 1000 Mbps. Ensure that the settings of the card and its link partner are compatible, e.g. if the card is set to 100 Mbps full duplex, the link partner must also be set to 100 Mbps full duplex.

  • 1000Base-SX operates only at 1000 Mbps and only in full-duplex mode. It does not interoperate with the 100Base-FX card.

  • If using Jumbo Ethernet frames, ensure that all switches in the data path support the jumbo frame size and that both ends of the connection support jumbo frames. 1000Base-T supports jumbo frames only at 1000 Mbps.

  • OLA/R: SX and T cards are not considered to be like cards for OLA/R; that is, you cannot replace an SX card with a T card, and vice versa. Note: HP does not support OLA/R on A6794A although HP-UX tools will allow the device to be suspended and resumed.
