This section describes the requirements for installing version B.11.23.01 of the Gigabit Ethernet driver.

Unsupported Capabilities

The following features are not supported in this release:

  • HP-UX VLAN (virtual LAN)

  • SNA transport

  • OSI transport

  • NetWare IPX

OS Platform and Version Compatibility

  • HP-UX 11i v2.0 operating system. The drivers specified in this release note are for the HP-UX 11i version 2 release only. They are not for use on systems running prior versions of HP-UX.

Software Requirements

Required Patches

There are no required patches.

Hardware Requirements

For the maximum number of cards supported by a particular system, please see the configuration guide for your system or ask your HP representative.

System Resource Requirements

  • Ensure you have at least 256 megabytes of memory per card.

  • HP does not recommend installing more Gigabit Ethernet cards than there are processors on your system.

Hardware and Software Installation Instructions

For instructions on how to install and configure the Gigabit Ethernet hardware and software, refer to the Quick Installation and Configuration Guide (see “Availability of Documentation”).

To verify that the driver was loaded in the kernel, check the what(1) string by executing either of the following commands (depending on which driver you have):

what /stand/vmunix | grep drivername

where drivername can be any one of:
igelan, iether, or gelan

You should see a response like:

igelan_ilan Version: 2 Jan 22 2003
igelan Revision: B.11.23.01 Jan 22 2003

Limitations

Following are the limits of Gigabit Ethernet:

  • When running 1000Base-T back-to-back at either 10 or 100 Mbit/s, you must use a crossover cable configuration. At 1000 Mbit/s, you can use either a crossover or straight-through cable.

  • 1000Base-T operates at 10, 100, or 1000 Mbit/s. Only full-duplex mode is supported at 1000 Mbit/s. Both full-duplex and half-duplex modes are supported at 10/100 Mbit/s. The 1000Base-T card and link partner (for example, a switch) must be set to autonegotiation to run at 1000 Mbit/s. Ensure that the settings of the card and its link partner are compatible, e.g. if the card is set to 100 Mbit/s full duplex, the link partner must also be set to 100 Mbit/s full duplex.

  • 1000Base-SX operates only at 1000 Mbit/s and only in full-duplex mode. It does not interoperate with the 100Base-FX card.

  • 1000Base-T supports jumbo frames only at 1000 Mbit/s.

If using Jumbo Ethernet frames, ensure that all end stations on a given LAN (that is, no routers or layer 3 switches in between) have the same MTU setting. However switch ports in the LAN can have any MTU setting greater than or equal to the end station MTU. For example, if the end station MTU is 2000, switch ports connecting the two end stations (ports directly attached to the end stations as well as ports connecting intermediate switches, if any) should be configured for MTU >= 2000.

  • The lanadmin -S option is not supported. The supported interface for setting speed is via the -X option.

  • The A6825A PCI 1000Base-T card and A6847A 1000Base-SX card operate only in PCI mode even if placed in a PCI-X slot. Therefore, when viewing the output from the olrad -c command, please ignore the line that indicates 133MHz capable frequency; it is not supported.
