Installing Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet cards consists of the following steps:

  • Power down your system, or card section (if applicable)

  • Insert the card in the card cage

  • Power up your system, or card section (if applicable)

  • Install the appropriate driver(s) if necessary.

  • Configure the card

  • Verify the installation

This chapter provides detailed instructions to install and configure your card.

For detailed help in resolving installation, configuration and operational problems, see Chapter 4 “Troubleshooting”.

Create a Record or Map of Your Internetwork

Be sure to create or update a record of your network and internetwork before attempting installation. You may find the Ethernet Card Configuration Worksheet in the appendix helpful for this. You can also create a map showing how pieces of your internetwork are related. Your records should include the following:

  • Approximate dimensions of the building or room containing the Ethernet network

  • Location of routers, bridges and gateways

  • Location of nodes and node connections

  • Location of network segments and subnets within each segment

  • Hostname of each node

  • Internet address and alias of each node (in the case of gateways, each Ethernet card has its own Internet address and alias)

  • Hardware path of each card in the system, including Ethernet cards (you can use this information as part of a disaster recovery plan)

  • Version number of the operating system installed on each node
