The exact steps involved in replacing a card will vary depending on the type of system in which the card is installed. However, the process is not difficult and you should be able to successfully replace a card without receiving any error messages by using the following process:

  1. Determine which slot has the card to be removed, and which slot is to receive the replacement card.

If you will be replacing a card with exactly the same product, and installing the replacement card into exactly the same slot, you may skip to step #3. The existing ppa value will be kept by the system and the current configuration information will work for the replacement product.

If you will be replacing a card with a different product, or changing the slot into which the replacement card will be installed, continue with step #2.

  2. Edit any of the following files that contain Ethernet card configuration entries:

    /etc/re.config.d/netconf
    /etc/rc.config.d/hp<drivername>conf

Replace <drivername> with the filename for the driver you use. For example: /etc/rc.config.d/hpigelanconf

Change the configuration entries as appropriate for the replacement card type and card slot. See the sections on installing and configuring the card if you need more detailed information.

  3. Power down the system. Note: Just removing power to the card’s section is not sufficient.

  4. Remove the existing card from the system. If there are multiple cards in the system, be sure you remove the correct one.

  5. Insert the replacement card into the desired card slot.

  6. Restart the system.

Your system may, or may not require that the system be shut down before replacing a Gigabit Ethernet card. For information about your particular system, see:
