The HP RAID 4Si controller is a high-performance, intelligent PCI-to-SCSI host controller with RAID control capability. It lets you link multiple hard disk drives together and write data across them as if they were one large drive. You configure your linked drives into a RAID (Redundant Array Of Independent Disks) subsystem.

NOTE: The HP RAID 4Si controller supports only SCSI disk drives (no tape drives). It is most commonly connected to an HP SureStore E SC10 JBOD (called the SC10 in this manual).

Features

Beginning in approximately June 2002, a new version (HP part number A5856-60101) of the HP RAID 4Si controller replaces the previous version (HP part number A5856-60001). The new version has the following features:

  • Four external channels using 68-pin Ultra High Density connectors.

  • Up to 15 disks per channel.

  • Up to eight logical drives (logical volumes).

  • Up to eight physical drives per logical drive.

  • Boot from external disks.

  • One DIMM socket for 66 MHz, 64-bit, unbuffered ECC SDRAM, with 128 MB cache.

  • On-board battery backup for cache memory (provides up to 72 hours of data retention).

  • Automatic rebuild of Hot Spares.

  • Hot swapping of drives (not necessary to bring system down to replace failed drives).

  • SCSI cable lengths up to 12 meters with LVD.

  • RAID levels 0, 1, 3, 5, 1+0, 3+0, and 5+0 supported.

Features Not Supported

The new version (HP part number A5856-60101) of the HP RAID 4Si controller does not support the following features:

  • Multi-Initiator (connecting more than one controller to a single JBOD).

  • Connectivity to internal disks.

NOTE: The HP RAID 4Si controller is not supported for installation in workstations.
