This section describes the steps for changing a logical drive's RAID level. Note that these steps assume you have started IRM and (if applicable) selected the HP RAID 4Si controller the logical drive is configured on.

IMPORTANT: Keep these things in mind when considering changing a logical drive's RAID level:
  • You can change from or to RAID 3 only if the stripe size is 64KB.

  • You might need to add one or more physical disks (for example, if you are changing from RAID 1 [two disks required] to RAID 5 [at least three disks required]).

  • The RAID drive size might increase after you change the level (for example, if you change from RAID 1 to RAID 0, the size doubles).

  1. Backup the data currently stored on the logical drive's physical drive(s).

  2. Ensure that the logical drive you want to change is not in use. Note that you do not get a warning message if the drive is being used.

Menu path: "Management Menu" → Advanced Menu

The "Logical Drives Configured" screen, with the "Reconstruct Drive" menu to the bottom left, displays. You are placed in the "Reconstruct Drive" menu.

  3. Highlight the logical drive you want to change the RAID level for and press Enter. IRM scans the system for available physical drives. The "RECONSTRUCT - Logical Drive n" screen displays, listing all of the available physical drives.

  4. Highlight each physical drive you want to add, and then press the spacebar to select it ( RDY changes to rDY for the selected drive). If you select a drive by mistake, just re-highlight it and press the spacebar to unselect it (rDY changes back to RDY, showing that it is now unselected). Note that you can reconstruct only one logical drive at a time.

  5. When you have selected all of the physical drives you want to add, press Enter. The "Reconstruct" menu displays.

  6. Select RAID = n and press Enter. The "RAID Level" menu displays.

  7. Select the new level you want the logical drive to be; you are placed back in the "Reconstruct" menu.

  8. Select Reconstruct. You are asked if you want the reconstruct to start.

IMPORTANT: Once the reconstruct starts, you cannot abort it.

If you do not want to do the reconstruct, select NO; you are placed back in the "Reconstruct" menu. Press Esc; you are placed back in the "RECONSTRUCT - Logical Drive n" screen. Go to step 10.

If you want to do the reconstruct, select YES. The reconstruct starts; go to step 9.

  9. When the reconstruct starts, a window titled "Reconstruct Logical Drive-n Progress" displays. The window contains a horizontal bar that grows, showing you the progress of the reconstruct.

  10. When the reconstruct is complete, the progress bar shows "100%." If the logical drive's size increased, an informational message about it displays. Press any key to continue.

The "Reconstruct Logical Drive-n Progress" window closes, and you are placed back in the "RECONSTRUCT - Logical Drive n" screen.

  11. Press Esc. You are placed in the "Reconstruct Drive" menu.

  12. Press Esc. You are placed in the "Management Menu."

  13. Press Esc. An exit confirmation dialog box displays.

  14. Highlight YES and press Enter; IRM ends.
