Architecture

Partition Manager v2.0 is a Web-based application that runs within the Tomcat-based Servlet Engine (a component in the HP-UX Web Server Suite). The Servlet Engine may be running on an nPartition in the complex being managed, or may be running on a different network node.

Partition Manager interacts with the user through a Web browser running on a client system. The client system may be the same as the server system, or it may be a separate workstation or PC. The Web browsers supported by Partition Manager v2.0 are Mozilla, Netscape version 7.0, and Microsoft® Internet Explorer version 6.0.

Partition Manager uses HP WBEM Services provided by a CIM Server to obtain information about nPartitions. Interaction with local nPartitions occurs over the IPMI BT interface. Interaction with remote complexes occurs over the IPMI over LAN interfaces.

Partition Manager executes partition(1) commands to perform administration functions.

Partition Manager helps you perform complex configuration tasks without having to remember commands and parameters. You select nPartitions, cells, I/O chassis, or other components from the graphical display, then select an action from a menu. The actions available from the menu are always appropriate to the current view and the selected objects.

Partition Manager displays the command(s) that it uses to perform configuration tasks. You can use this feature to help you learn the command syntax, and to construct scripts to automate frequently-performed tasks.

Manage System Hardware

Use Partition Manager to view your server's hardware inventory and the status of hardware components. Partition Manager detects and reports configuration problems in your complex.

Partition Manager helps you configure and maintain your complex.

  • Change the name of the complex.

  • Create, remove, and modify nPartitions.

  • Power on and off individual cells and I/O chassis.

  • Manage cell and I/O chassis attention indicators.

  • Add and replace PCI devices in nPartitions.

Remote Management

You can use Partition Manager from any supported Web browser with WBEM access to the complex being managed. Remote nPartitions may be running any operating system supported on the hardware platform.

Partition Manager v2.0 can manage remote complexes based on the HP sx1000 chipset or HP sx2000 chipset.

Step-by-Step Guidance Through Complex Tasks

Partition Manager walks you through each step in the creation of nPartitions.

All actions performed by Partition Manager are tracked in a log file that can be viewed at any time.
