Adding Principals to the Database

When you add a principal you must specify some basic information, namely,

  • Principal and ticket information located on the General Tab

  • Password and Password expiration information located on the Password Tab

  • Other Principal attributes located on the Attributes Tab

Each tab include default values, as controlled by the Group Settings. Use the Edit Menu to reload the default values at any time, while working on a principal. Refer to “Loading Default Values for a Principal”, for more information.

To add a principal

From the Principal Information window, use this window to add a principal with the relevant ticket information. Given below is a step-wise procedure to add a new principal.

  1. In the kadminl_ui window, choose the Principals tab, and select the realm where the new principals will reside.

  2. Click on New to display the Principal Information window

  3. In the General tab, enter the principal name and ticket information.

  4. Click on Apply in the General Tab. The Change Password dialog box appears:

    You cannot use the Change Password button in the Password tab as it is disabled when a principal is being created. Refer to “Changing Password Information”, for more information.

  5. In the Password tab, enter the password information and password.

  6. In the Attributes tab, enter the other principal attributes. Refer to Changing Principal Attributes for more details.

  7. In the Principal Information window, click OK.

The List of Principals in the kadminl_ui window is not automatically refreshed after this operation. The principal is present in the database, but it appears in the principal list only after you refresh it using the List All or Search buttons.

To simultaneously add multiple principals with the same settings

  1. Enter the first principal name in the Principal Information window.

  2. Select the targeted settings for the principal on all tabs of the Principal Information window.

  3. Click Apply. This saves the new entry to the principal database but does not close the Principal Information window.

  4. The Change Password window appears. Enter the initial password for the new principal. Click OK.

  5. Enter another principal name on the Principal Information window, and click Apply. Provide the password information in the Change Password window.

  6. Continue adding principals until all the principals have been added.

  7. When all new principals with the common attributes have been added, click the Ok or the Cancel button to close the Principal Information window.
