Planning to Move/Add Processors

It is frequently desirable to move processors among servers or add processors to balance resources, adjust headroom, deal with existing problems, or prevent anticipated ones. With HP Integrity Essentials Capacity Advisor, you can make more informed decisions about reconfiguring your servers to improve the Quality of Service or maintain it with a more efficient configuration.

Capacity Advisor allows you to size your system with more precision, not based on a simple peak utilization value, but with a more accurate grasp of the true Quality of Service, based on knowing the answers to questions such as whether your system is more than 70% busy an unacceptable percentage of the time.

Two procedures are described below:

Estimating the Effect of Moving Processors

Prerequisites. To estimate the effect of moving processors:

You should be familiar with Capacity Advisor operations (see Basic Operations).
You must be logged in to HP Systems Insight Manager (see Accessing Capacity Advisor).
You must have already collected data on the systems of interest (see Collecting Data).

Procedure 5-2 To Estimate the Effect of Moving Processors

Determine the Current Quality of Service
Follow the procedure in Generating a Report to generate a report with the preferred metric for Quality of Service for the systems that might be exchanging processors.
Determine the Systems to Exchange Processors
Make sure to consider issues such as ownership of the systems the processors are moving among and compatibility of the processors.
Create a Scenario Including the Systems Exchanging Processors
Follow the procedure in Creating a Scenario to create a scenario including the systems you are planning to exchange processors among.
Move Processors From Donor Systems to The Receivers
Follow the procedure described in Editing a System to:
1. Edit the donor systems to reduce number of processors.
2. Edit the receiving systems to increase the number of processors.
Check the New Quality of Service
Follow the procedure in Generating a Report to generate a report on the resource utilization of the systems in the scenario. Compare the resource utilization with that described in the report generated before moving the processors.
If Necessary, Repeat Moving Processors and Checking Quality of Service
If the desired improvement in Quality of Service is not achieved, try moving processors among other systems in the scenario.

Prerequisites. To estimate the effect of adding processors:

Procedure 5-3 To Estimate the Effect of Adding Processors

Determine the Current Quality of Service
Follow the procedure in Generating a Report to generate a report with the preferred metric for Quality of Service on the the systems that are being considered for additional processors.
Determine Where to Add Processors.
When adding processors to an environment, it is frequently desirable to consider adding them to more than one system. Use this step to determine the set of systems that are most likely to benefit from adding processors.
Add Processors to Systems
Follow the procedure in Editing a System to add processors to one or more systems.
Check the New Quality of Service
Follow the procedure in Generating a Report to generate a report on the resource utilization of the systems in the scenario. Compare the resource utilization with that described in the report generated before adding the processors.
If Necessary, Repeat Adding Processors and Checking Quality of Service
If the desired improvement in Quality of Service is not achieved, try adding processors to other systems in the scenario.
