The VSE Management Software relies on WBEM providers and other agent software installed on the managed systems. These products can be installed on managed systems from the CMS using the Configure VSE Agents menu. When updated versions of the HP-UX agents and providers are available, they can be downloaded to the CMS from the HP VSE Managed Node Software Update web site, and then reinstalled on the managed systems.

Configure Secure Shell (OpenSSH)

In order to install software from the CMS to managed systems, OpenSSH must be installed on the managed systems and configured for use by HP SIM. Use Procedure 3-9 to configure OpenSSH for HP SIM. This step can also be done manually using the mxagentconfig command. Refer to mxagentconfig(1M) for more information.

NOTE: Preinstallation steps are required for Linux and Microsoft® Windows® managed systems. For details, refer to the following sections:

Procedure 3-9 Configure OpenSSH for HP Systems Insight Manager

  1. Select the systems to configure, and choose Configure->Configure or Repair Agents... from the HP SIM menu bar.

  2. The Configure or Repair Settings page is displayed. Login using a privileged account that is available on each of the selected managed systems.

  3. Select Configure secure shell (SSH) access. Refer to the HP SIM online help for this screen for additional details.

For detailed information about configuring SSH for use with HP SIM, refer to the HP white paper Secure Shell (SSH) in HP SIM 5.0, available from the Information Library link at http://hp.com/go/hpsim.

Install HP-UX VSE Agents

Procedure 3-10 installs the VSE agents and providers to HP-UX managed systems from the CMS. You can select the individual agent software that you want to install from the depot files located in /var/opt/vse/depot. The depot files were installed on the CMS with the VSEMgmt bundle. If you prefer to install the agent software manually, refer to “Alternate Procedure for Manual Installation of Agent Software”.

IMPORTANT: When you upgrade an existing version of the gWLM agent, processes placed in a PSET or FSS group by gwlmplace are moved to the default PSET or default FSS group. You can avoid this behavior by placing applications in workloads when you define the workloads. See gwlmplace(1M) for additional information.

Procedure 3-10 Install HP-UX Managed System Software from the CMS

Prerequisite.  OpenSSH must be installed on the managed systems and configured for use by HP SIM. Refer to “Configure Secure Shell (OpenSSH)” for details.

  1. Select your HP-UX managed systems and choose Configure->Configure VSE Agents->Install HP-UX VSE Agents... from the HP SIM menu bar. Click Run Now to start the installation. A table of available HP-UX agent software is displayed, with default selections already applied. Not all products need to be installed on all systems. For example, it is not necessary to install the Virtual Machines Provider except on VM Host servers and virtual machines. However, there is no harm in installing the agents and providers on managed systems that do not require them.

You can accept the default selections, or modify the selections. Click the check box in the table header to select or deselect all software choices. Click the check box in any row to select or deselect the software shown in that row.

IMPORTANT: Some of the products available for selection require the managed system to be rebooted after installation. This is indicated in the Requires Reboot? column. If you select a product that requires a reboot, the managed system will automatically be rebooted when the software installation completes. The default selections do not include any software that requires a reboot.

  2. When you have selected the software that you want to install, click OK. The selected software will be installed on each of the managed systems that were previously selected. HP SIM displays the progress and results of the installation in the Task Results screen. Review the output for error messages before continuing.

If any of the selected software requires a reboot after installation, the managed system is rebooted automatically.

  3. Select the systems that you want to manage with gWLM, and choose Configure->Configure VSE Agents->Start gWLM Agent... from the HP SIM menu bar to start the gWLM agent on the selected systems.

  4. Run the HP SIM discovery process again. This will allow HP SIM to retrieve additional information about the systems where agent software has been installed. Choose Options->Identify Systems... from the HP SIM menu bar, then click Run Now.

Install Linux VSE Agents

Procedure 3-11 installs the VSE agents and providers to Linux managed systems from the CMS. All the products contained in /var/opt/vse/depot/vseagent.tar are installed. This file was installed on the CMS with the VSEMgmt bundle. If you prefer to install the agent software manually, refer to “Alternate Procedure for Manual Installation of Agent Software”.

Procedure 3-11 Install Linux Managed System Software from the CMS

Prerequisite.  OpenSSH must be installed on the managed systems and configured for use by HP SIM. Refer to “Configure Secure Shell (OpenSSH)” for details.

  1. Select your Linux managed systems and choose Configure->Configure VSE Agents->Install Linux VSE Agents... from the HP SIM menu bar.

  2. Click Run Now to start the installation. HP SIM displays the progress and results of the installation in the Task Results screen. Review the output for error messages before continuing.

  3. Run the HP SIM discovery process again. This will allow HP SIM to retrieve additional information about the systems where agent software has been installed. Choose Options->Identify Systems... from the HP SIM menu bar, then click Run Now.

Install Windows VSE Agents

Procedure 3-12 installs the VSE agents and providers to Microsoft Windows managed systems from the CMS. All the Windows installation packages /var/opt/vse/depot/*.msi are installed. These files were installed on the CMS with the VSEMgmt bundle. If you prefer to install the agent software manually, refer to “Alternate Procedure for Manual Installation of Agent Software”.

Procedure 3-12 Install Windows Managed System Software from the CMS

Prerequisite.  OpenSSH must be installed on the managed systems and configured for use by HP SIM. Refer to “Configure Secure Shell (OpenSSH)” for details.

  1. Select your Windows managed systems and choose Configure->Configure VSE Agents->Install Windows VSE Agents... from the HP SIM menu bar.

  2. Click Run Now to start the installation. HP SIM displays the progress and results of the installation in the Task Results screen. Review the output for error messages before continuing.

NOTE: Windows systems must be rebooted after installation of the VSE agent software.
  3. Run the HP SIM discovery process again. This will allow HP SIM to retrieve additional information about the systems where agent software has been installed. Choose Options->Identify Systems... from the HP SIM menu bar, then click Run Now.

Downloading Updated Agents and Providers

Updates to the HP-UX managed system software packages can be downloaded at any time from the HP VSE Managed Node Software Update web site. The following software is available for download from that site:

  • VSE agents, WBEM providers, and other support software required on HP-UX 11i managed systems

  • HP-UX 11i patches required on a managed system for correct operation of the software

  • The vseassist diagnostic utility, which can identify configuration issues on the CMS and managed systems and recommend solutions for them. For more information about vseassist, refer to vseassist(1M).

Alternate Procedure for Manual Installation of Agent Software

If you do not want to use the procedures described above, you can selectively install the agents required for HP-UX managed systems from the depot files located in /var/opt/vse/depot. The depot files were installed on the CMS with the VSEMgmt bundle. They can be copied to a Software Distributor depot server, or the file can be copied to each managed node for selective installation.

Assuming the depot files have been copied to /var/tmp, the following examples show the commands to use to install individual agents. If you are using a Software Distributor depot server, replace the source part of these commands with the server location of the depot.

Install the gWLM agent:

# /usr/sbin/swinstall -s /var/tmp/T2743AA.depot T2743AA

Install the Utilization Provider:

# /usr/sbin/swinstall -s /var/tmp/up.depot UtilProvider

Install the VM Provider version 2.0:

# /usr/sbin/swinstall -s /var/tmp/hpvm2_0.depot VMProvider,r=A.02.00

Install the nPartition Provider:

# /usr/sbin/swinstall -s /var/tmp/nParProvider.depot nParProvider

Install the vPar Provider:

# /usr/sbin/swinstall -s /var/tmp/vParProvider.depot vParProvider

Similarly, you can individually install the RPM files that are included in /var/opt/vse/depot/vseagent.tar on Linux systems, using the rpm command. On Windows managed systems, you can individually install the /var/opt/vse/depot/*.msi files by double-clicking the files that you want to install.
