System requirements for the VM Host and virtual
machines are described in the HP Integrity Virtual Machines Installation, Configuration,
and Administration manual. In addition,
see the HP Integrity Virtual Machines Release Notes, which are available on the product media. The most up-to-date
release notes are available at the following location: docs.hp.com
For information about installing supported operating systems
on guests, see the HP Integrity VM documentation cited previously. With use of VM Manager in the HP SIM and VSE Management
Software environment, any managed node must have WBEM and
the appropriate WBEM credentials to support the visualization and
configuration features of Virtualization Manager and the collection
of utilization data by HP Capacity Advisor. Without WBEM, only HP
Global Workload Manager (gWLM) is functional. Managed nodes are systems
that the user has instructed HP SIM to manage. In HP SIM, all virtual
machines and their VM Host are managed nodes. Systems become managed
nodes by the HP SIM “discovery” mechanism. Nodes
can be discovered by HP SIM in various ways, including automated discovery
or manual addition of the node. For example, you can configure and
initiate node discovery by using the HP SIM Options Discovery menu. To use VM Manager and all its features, install
the required provider components on the VM Host and on the guests.
The provider components are the VM Provider and the Utilization Provider: The VM Provider provides configuration data on the
VM Host and guests. This information is delivered using WBEM. Install
the VM Provider when you install or upgrade the HP Integrity Virtual
Machines product. Install the VM Provider on the VM Host and on each
virtual machine. The version of the
VM Provider installed on the VM Host must be equal to or greater than
the version of the Integrity VM product installed on the VM Host.
For example, you can install a version 4.0 VM Provider on a VM Host
with Integrity VM version 4.0; however, you cannot install a version
3.5 VM Provider on a VM Host with Integrity VM version 4.0. As for guests, the VM Provider
and Integrity VM versions also need not match. A guest's VM Provider
can be an earlier version than that of the Integrity VM running on
the VM Host. HP recommends upgrading the guests to the latest version
of VM Provider available, even if the version is greater than the
version of the Integrity VM on the VM Host. When the VM Host Integrity
VM is upgraded, you are not required to upgrade the VM Provider on
each of the guests; however, HP recommends upgrading the VM Providers
on the guests to match the version of the Integrity VM on the VM Host. For the VM Hosts, install the VM Provider (bundle
name: VMProvider). This component is included with the Integrity VM
product and with the HP-UX 11i v2 December 2005 (or later) release. For HP-UX guests, install the VM Provider (bundle
name: VMProvider). This component is included with the Integrity VM
product and with the supported HP-UX releases. It is also provided
in the guest kit area on the VM Host. For HP-UX 11i v2, the guest
kit area is: /opt/hpvm/guest-images/hpux/11iv2 For HP-UX 11i v3, , the guest kit area is: /opt/hpvm/guest-images/hpux/11iv3 For Windows guests,
install the WMI Integrity VM Provider (installer: WMIHpvmProvider64.msi).
This component is included with the HP Integrity Essentials Foundation
Pack for Windows, which contains HP Smart Setup Media (SSM) version
5.5, and with the VSE Management Software. This component is also
included in the following guest kits area on the VM Host: /opt/hpvm/guest-images/windows For Linux guests, the VM Provider (bundle name: VMProvider)
is part of the Hpvmprovider RPM kit, which is included in the HP
Integrity Essentials Foundation Pack for Linux (also known as HPIEFL
for Linux) and in the guest kits area on the VM Host. For SUSE Linux,
the guest kit area is: /opt/hpvm/guest-images/linux/SLES For Red Hat Linux, the guest kit area is: /opt/hpvm/guest-images/linux/RHEL
The Utilization Provider gathers utilization statistics
for CPU, memory, disk, and LAN. This information is delivered using
WBEM and gathers data using a daemon (/usr/sbin/utild). Install the Utilitization Provider on the VM Host and on each
virtual machine. For VM Hosts, install the HP-UX Utilization Provider
(bundle name: UtilProvider). This component is included with HP-UX
11i v2 December 2005 or later and in all Operating Environment Update
Releases of HP-UX 11i v3. It is also included with the VSE Management
Software. For HP-UX guests, install the HP-UX Utilization Provider
(bundle name: UtilProvider). This component is included with the supported
HP-UX releases, and with the VSE Management Software. For Windows guests, install the WMI Utilization Provider
(installer: WMIUtilProvider64.msi). This component is included with
the HP Integrity Essentials Foundation
Pack for Windows, containing HP Smart Setup Media, version 5.5, and
with the VSE Management Software. For Linux guests, the Utilization Provider (name:
hp-utilprovider) is included in the HP
Integrity Essentials Foundation Pack for Linux, and with the VSE Management
Software.
