Release Notes for STM on HP-UX 11.00 (June 2000)
These release notes cover the June 2000 (IPR 0006) release of
Support Plus for HP-UX 11.00 running on S800/S700 systems.
NOTE: As of the September 1999 release, the name of the
Diagnostic/IPR Media has been changed to Support Plus. In addition,
the format has changed so that there is a separate CD-ROM for each
version of the operating system (HP-UX 10.20 and HP-UX
11.0).
Overview
The Support Tools Manager (STM) provides a complete set of online
support tools for HP-UX systems, enabling you to verify and
troubleshoot PA-RISC system hardware, and to examine system logs.
STM offers several tool types, including information tools,
verifiers, exercisers, expert tools, firmware update tools,
diagnostics and utilities.
Installed with STM (as of IPR 9902) are the EMS Hardware Monitors,
an important tool for maintaining system availability. The EMS
hardware monitors allow you to monitor the operation of a wide
variety of hardware products and be alerted immediately if any
failure or other unusual event occurs. For more information, see
/usr/sbin/stm/Rel_NOTES.HWE.

Changes
The online Support Tools Manager (STM) was enhanced and updated
for the current release.
Changes to User
Interface and Platform
- Enhanced platform to support multiple-view (Predictive-enabled)
EMS hardware monitors. See EMS Release Notes for more details.
- Fixed memory allocation problem that caused a SIGBUS in certain
instances. In Dec 99 and earlier releases, this problem could cause
the diaglogd daemon to enter an endless loop and create excessive
CPU usage. In the March 2000 release, this problem could cause the
diaglogd daemon to abort.
- Enhanced memory logging daemon (memlogd) to support single-bit
error (SBI) trending and reporting. This enhancement allows the
memory monitor to generate single-bit error events and to perform
trending. Memlogd was modified to have the ability to report all
single-bit errors and pages deallocated.
- Fixed problem that can occur if hardware is removed from the
computer system and the system is rebooted; Restart Messages were
generated from EMS indicating that the hardware was still being
monitored. (psmctd was not removing monitor requests at shutdown).
- Fixed diagmond code in which some semaphores are not released
in the event of diagmond aborting during initialization and
shutdown. Some of the last few new semaphores were not added to a
couple of cases where semaphores are released. No problems have
been reported because of this issue.
- Fixed problem with cstm, whereby cstm aborts when Select Class
of Devices (scl) command is issued with a hardware path only.
- Added support for HP3404A_Tachyon Fibre Channel Interface:
diagnose, information, and firmware update tools.
General
Changes to Tools
- Modified licensing to support new versions of A-Class computers
(codename Crescendo II): the 440 MhZ A400 (hversion 0x5d6) and the
550 MHz A500 (0x5d5).
- Added support for HPC6280-4000, HPC7200-7000, HPC7145-7000, and
HPC7145-8000 autochanger.
- Added memory support for A-Class (Models A400 and A500,
codename Crescendo II), for the J6000 (codename Duet) and for the
L3000 (codename Marcato).
- Fixed problem with memory tools on K-Class systems with memory
sizes greater than 3.75 gigabytes. On these systems, if the
location of a memory error is at an address greater than 4.0
gigabytes, then the decoder would point to an incorrect memory
module.
- Changed default Universal Serial Bus (USB) entry to use the PCI
info tool instead of pa_module.
- Added ID tool support for A5856A, an internal RAID disk array
for N and L Class computers.
- Added ID tool support for iop_drv driver.
- Added support for HP A1262A/A1299A FX5/FX10 graphics (codename
"Rockwood"): information and verifier tools.
- Added support for TEACCD-224E CD-ROM: verifier, exerciser, and
information tools.
Changes to
Specific Tools
- Information tools:
- Added support for A-Class (Models A400 and A500, codename
Crescendo II), for the J6000 (codename Duet) and for the L3000
(codename Marcato).
- Fixed problems with the information tool for the Disk Array
Model 60/FC (Product ID A5277A, codename "Optimus Prime"):
- There were inconsistencies with how drive list where
shown. In some places colons were used, and in other places
commas were used. Now all drive lists use colons.
(JAGab71627).
- Some error messages not logged when STM was run
unsuccessfully. Now should get a logged message when STM is
run unsuccessfully. (JAGab67925).
- Added support to PCI information tool for Xircom Universal
Serial Bus (USB).
- Added support for I20 Interface Adapter (RAID).
- Added support for HP A1262A/A1299A FX5/FX10 graphics
(codename "Rockwood").
- Added support for TEACCD-224E CD-ROM.
- Added support for A5856A, an internal RAID disk array for N
and L Class computers.
- Added support for Fabric (new Fibre Channel topology) to
the Info Tool for the A5158A Fibre Channel Adapter.
- Completed part of a fix to a problem with the CPU Info tool
that occurred on Multiple-Processor (MP) systems on HP-UX 11.00
only. Previously, the CPU Info tool was causing numerous
warning messages to be logged to the file
/var/adm/syslog/syslog.log. This was due to non-MP-safe calls
being made when one of the CPUs above 0 was selected.
To completely fix this problem requires two steps:
- Load the patch PHKL_21420 ("s700_800 11.00 specify
diag2 as MP-safe"), for example from the HP IT Resource
Center at http://itresourcecenter.hp.com. (The
patch is not on the Support Plus CD-ROM).
- Install the June 2000 release of Support Tools.
- Exerciser tools:
- Fixed bug whereby the activity log for exercisers displayed
the time (minutes/seconds) incorrectly.
- Added support for TEACCD-224E CD-ROM.
- Verifier tools:
- Added support for HP A1262A/A1299A FX5/FX10 graphics
(codename "Rockwood").
- Added support for TEACCD-224E CD-ROM.
- Diagnose tools:
- Firmware update tools:
- Added support for HPC7145-8000 autochanger.
- Added support for A5856A, an internal RAID disk array for N
and L Class computers.
- Added support for I20 Interface Adapter (RAID).
- Expert tools:
- Fixed problems with the expert tool for the Disk Array
Model 60/FC (Product ID A5277A, codename "Optimus Prime"):
- When "binding LUNS/replacing LUN zero" the segment size
had a default radial button chosen. This size did not
always match the default segment size that would be used
when using the command line to bind a lun. This was
confusing to the customers. A new button, called "Default",
was added to the expert tool "Bind lun..." and "Replace LUN
Zero" command in the Options window for "LUN Segment Size".
This new radial button is the default chosen radial button.
When chosen, the default size matches what the command line
uses. (JAGac29678).
- There were inconsistencies with how drive list were
shown. In some places colons were used, and in other places
commas were used. Now all drive lists use colons.
(JAGab71627).
- Fixed problem with the expert tool for the SCSI Library,
whereby the help menu was non-functional. Also, added support
for the HPC7145-8000 autochanger.
- Fixed problem with the expert tool for SCSI DLTs, whereby
the help menu was non-functional.
- Enhanced CPU Expert Tool to allow it to be run with a "Self
Maintainer" license.
- Enhanced the SCSI Disk Expert Tool. Some of the newer
Quantum disks require additional amount of time to perform a
clear log operation. This change increases the timeout value
from 5 seconds to 10 seconds.
- Enhanced FC60 Expert Tool:
- Added three LSI ASC/ASCQ codes as per the LSI spec.
(JAGad03213)
- Changed the event log to show only the current arrays
events. (JAGac94880)
- Changed the menu items for hot spares to check if there
are any disks available to perform the actions create or
delete. (JAGab74916)
- Logtool:
- Logtool utility will change to use the
/var/stm/data/os_decode_xref file to find decode modules to
launch to decode all entry types, other than lpmc. Lpmc entries
will continue to use the
/var/stm/config/tools/utility/lpmc_decode_xref file.
- Fixed problem with LPMC decoder, whereby they might fail to
decode data after 64-bit Hard Physical Address (HPA)
implementation.
- Added decode module support for A5856A, an internal RAID
disk array for N and L Class computers.
- Added decode module support for I20 Interface Adapter
(RAID) for iop_drv driver.
- Changed timestamp to GM Time in the Chassis Code that the
cclogd daemon writes out.
- Fixed mapping of and display of default SCSI status by
SCSI-related decoders. Fixed the logic of the Sense Key
Specific Data Valid bit in the SCSI Sense data to display the
correct text, TRUE or FALSE. Error caused FALSE to be displayed
if the bit was set and TRUE to be displayed if the bit was
clear.

CAUTION
: Monitoring Changes for disc30, sdisk and disk array devices
As of IPR 9902 (Feb 99 release), there has been a change to the
way that monitoring is done for disc30, sdisk and the HA Disk Array
Models 10, 20, and 30FC.
Formerly, the "diaglogd exec" programs (pdisc30_exec,
pharaymon_exec, and psdisk_exec) handled driver error entries for
these devices.
As of IPR 9902, these programs have been deleted and their
functionality is now provided by the EMS Hardware Monitors.
If you had customized the configuration files for the diaglogd
exec programs (disk30_exec.cfg, sdisk_exec.cfg, and
haraymon_exec.cfg) you may wish to re-configure the EMS Hardware
Monitors to achieve the same results.
