These release notes cover the June 1999 (IPR 9906) release of the Diagnostic/IPR Media for HP-UX 11.00 running on S800/S700 systems.

Overview

The Support Tools Manager (STM) provides a complete set of online support tools for HP-UX systems, enabling you to verify and troubleshoot PA-RISC system hardware, and to examine system logs.

STM offers several tool types, including information tools, verifiers, exercisers, expert tools, firmware update tools, diagnostics and utilities.

Installed with STM (as of IPR 9902) are the EMS Hardware Monitors, an important tool for maintaining system availability. The EMS hardware monitors allow you to monitor the operation of a wide variety of hardware products and be alerted immediately if any failure or other unusual event occurs. Changes

The online Support Tools Manager (STM) was enhanced and updated for the current release.

The following new products are now supported:

• HP 9000 N-Class computer system, including N-Class systems that contain the 440 MhZ PA8500 (PCX-W) processor.
• Quantum DLT8000.

Changes to User Interface and Platform

• Changed EMS Hardware Monitors to be automatically enabled when the Support Tools package is installed. In previous releases a command was required.
• Added support of vt100 terminals (like the N-Class console) to mstm.

General Changes to Tools

• Added support for new hversion (Hardware Version) for N-Class. This hversion, 0xfcc, is for the 440 MhZ PA8500 (PCX-W) processor.
• Added memory support for L-Class.
• Updated Magneto-Optic (MO) tools. Now all MO tools support 2X/ 4X/8X MO products and Fibre Channel Mux. Added SCSI script functionality to Autochanger and Drive expert tools.
• Added shared SCSI tape tool library and shared tape tool library.
• Fixed problem whereby extra device files were left behind when access to a SCSI device failed.
• Fixed problem whereby the S700 driver and manager data would not be decoded correctly (SR 1653-293332, Chart JAGaa73231).
• Fixed problem whereby log messages have a missing parameter or have execute time in seconds only (Chart JAGaa73229).

Changes to Specific Tools

• Information tools:
  • (N-Class only) Added a new info tool named "system". This tool is different from other STM tools which are tied to a particular piece of driver-dependent hardware on the system, and are required to have a hardware path. The system tool is not tied to one device, but to hardware components that reside in the system which do not appear as hardware addresses in the STM system map. Examples of such hardware components are fans, power supplies, and Field Replaceable Units (FRUs).

    The STM User Interface has been modified to handle this enhancement. A new entry named "system" appears in the system map (xstm, mstm and cstm), and is not tied to a hardware path. In xstm, a new icon for "system" appears. In cstm, the string "system" can be used with the keyword "path" to select the map entry. The entry is always dev number 1, at the top of the map tree.

    The only tool supported for the "system" map entry is the info tool, which will create an info log consisting of cabinet information and all FRUs in the system. An info log for the info tool will describe what is being displayed in the system info log.

  • Added support for Quantum DLT8000 for scsi_dlt information tool.
  • Added support for Subvendor and Subsystem information on PCI cards in N-Class computers. (SR 4701-408062).
  • Added support for N-Class CPU.
  • Fixed problem with SCSI DDS information tool, to make sure that the Manufacture Date Code is within the range of printable characters.
  • Fixed problem whereby the information tool for the Fibre Channel MUX would fail to execute properly (Chart JAGaa94661).
  • (N-Class Only) PCI Fibre Channel Interface Information tool will exit with an INCOMPLETE status and log the following message: This card ( PCI Fibre Channel Interface )is not supported by the Information tool on N class machines.
• Exerciser tools:
  • Fixed problem whereby the activity log for the memory exerciser could grow very large. The problem could occur if the memory exerciser was executing at the same time as other programs that require large amounts of memory.
• Diagnose tools:
  • Added support for Quantum DLT8000 for scsi_dlt diagnose tool.
  • Fixed a problem, whereby the system panics when the diagnose tool is run on a Fiber Channel Mass Storage (FCMS) adapter, with a configuration to loop more than 2 minutes. The fix also requires a modification to the FCMS driver, so that in order to correct the defect, you must upgrade to B.11.00 EP3 (IPR 9905) or later.
• Firmware update tools:
  • Added support for SCSI Tape STK 9840 Tape Drive in the scsi_tape Firmware Update tool.
  • Fixed problem on the Firmware Update tool (sesencl) when executed on the HP A5272A and HP A5236A disk enclosures. The tool would reference a missing catalog file and exit with an incomplete status.
• Expert tools:
  • Added SCSI script functionality to Autochanger and Drive expert tools for Magneto Optic (MO) devices.
  • Added support for Quantum DLT8000 and HP A5597A Tape Library.
  • Fixed problem whereby the expert tool for the Fibre Channel MUX would fail to execute properly (Chart JAGaa94661).
• Logtool:
  • Added support for the chassis logging feature of the N-Class computer. The user can view the chassis boot log(s) or the chassis error log. The logtool version with this functionality is Logtool 7.0.
  • Fixed problem whereby entries in the memory log file with the status of PENDING would only appear in the view detail listing of logtool.
  • Fixed problem that occurred when log files were being displayed by logtool. The separator line between each section of information for an error entry in log files was incorrect. Selecting "Next" or "Previous" would cause the display to skip to the next separator line, regardless of whether the separator line was at the beginning of a new entry or just another section of the same entry.
  • Fixed problem in the "Format Raw" selection for logtool. The resulting formatted log file from a "Format Raw" command was placed in /var/stm/logs/os (the default log directory) even if the user, through a dialog box, chose to have it placed in a different directory (Chart JAGaa94093).

Known Problems

: Monitoring Changes for disc30, sdisk and disk array devices

As of IPR 9902 (Feb 99 release), there has been a change to the way that monitoring is done for disc30, sdisk and the HA Disk Array Models 10, 20, and 30FC.

Formerly, the "diaglogd exec" programs (pdisc30_exec, pharaymon_exec, and psdisk_exec) handled driver error entries for these devices.

As of IPR 9902, these programs have been deleted and their functionality is now provided by the EMS Hardware Monitors.

If you had customized the configuration files for the dialogd exec programs (disk30_exec.cfg, sdisk_exec.cfg, and haraymon_exec.cfg) you may wish to re-configure the EMS Hardware Monitors to achieve the same results.

Problem (D/R-Class only): The SCSI Multiplexer's Firmware Download Tool as supplied in the April 1999 IPR release does not work properly on D-Class and R-Class systems running HP-UX 11.0. Problems have NOT been reported with this tool in the February or June 1999 IPR releases. Therefore, if you plan to use this tool, install the June 1999 release of support tools or stay with those from the February 1999 release.

The following utilities are provided in this release:

• copyutil - utility to provide backup of SCSI Disks to backup devices
• logtool - utility to provide access to system log files for I/O and memory errors (replaces sysdiag LOGTOOL)
• flexrbld - legacy sysdiag utility for rebuild operations on FLEX Disk Arrays
• rewrite - legacy sysdiag utility for disk recovery
• dtdutil - legacy sysdiag utility to provide disk to disk copies
• modmutil - legacy sysdiag utility to provide modem functions
• moutil - utility for system wide information about Magneto Optical devices (new in STM 9810)

Defect Reporting

Use CHART to report defects in STM. The project name is diag.stm.tools.hpux for individual tools, and diag.stm.ui.hpux for the user interface. If you don't have access to CHART, contact an HP representative to enter a defect for you.
