Monitor Description
The Kernel Resource Monitor is designed to monitor a variety of HP-UX resources, so that system administrators are informed of problems before the system panics or performance is affected. If a problem is detected, the monitor immediately sends an event to the Event Monitoring Service (EMS), which alerts system administrators using the notification methods defined for the monitor. Clear, concise error messages identify the problem.

Configuration Files
The Kernel Resource monitor does not have the same method of configuration as the hardware monitors. It is configured automatically at install time.
The Kernel Resource monitor is not launched by the install process. Instead, users should configure and enable the monitor through SAM:
For a more detailed description of the process of using SAM to enable and configure EMS monitors, see the manual "Using Event Monitoring Services". This manual is available at the same location as the EMS Developer's Kit, at http://www.software.hp.com/ . (Look under the heading "High Availability" on that site.)
- In SAM's main window, double-click "Resource Management".
- Double-click "Event Monitoring Service".
- Select "Add Monitoring Request..." in the "Actions" tab.
- In the "Add or Copy monitor request" window, follow the resource hierarchy, select the resource you want to monitor and push the OK button.
- In the "Monitoring Request Parameters" window, decide the condition, the criterion and the means of notification and the polling interval. Then press the OK button.
(NEW, as of May 2001. "Configuring Monitors with the EMS GUI" at http://docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/diag/ems/ems_gui.htm.
There are no default parameters for the monitor. For each resource to be monitored, you must use SAM to set the value at which an event message will be generated.
The polling interval is set to 300 seconds by EMS.
