These release notes cover the September 2004 Release of System Fault Management (SysFaultMgmt).
System Fault Management (SysFaultMgmt) is a collection of tools for monitoring the health of HP servers and getting information about hardware, such as memory and CPU. These tools operate within the Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM) environment.
NOTE: This version of SysFaultMgmt does not support vPars systems.
For the latest and most complete information on SysFaultMgmt, see the "System Fault Management" section on the Diagnostics Homepage at http://docs.hp.com/hpux/diag/index.html.
The following providers are supplied:
- CPU Instance Provider (gathers information about the central processor units of HP servers)
- Memory Instance Provider (gathers information about the memory configuration of HP servers)
- EMS-to-WBEM Wrapper Provider (translates hardware events from EMS hardware monitors into "indications," a format that is compatible with WBEM)
Changes in SysFaultMgmt for this release include:
- Support was added for HP Integrity Servers
- The CPU Provider now reports the serial number and model string for processors on Itanium platforms, and on some PA platforms that report serial/part numbers.
- The Memory Provider now reports the serial number and part number for DIMMs on all Itanium platforms, and on some PA platforms that report serial/part numbers.
- General
If the SysFaultMgmt product is installed on your system, you must take the following steps, before and after updating the OnlineDiag product:
- Shut down the SysFaultMgmt subsystem via the command line:
/sbin/init.d/cimserver stop- Perform the OnlineDiag update.
- After the update is completed, restart the SysFaultMgmt subsystem via the command line:
/sbin/init.d/cimserver startNOTE: Should you need to kill monitoring during normal system operation, you must use steps 1 and 3, above, to avoid an automatic restart of monitoring; step 2 is the action you need to perform while monitoring is turned off.
Future updates to SysFaultMgmt and OnlineDiag will resolve this problem.
- The current implementation of the logging mechanism assumes that the path to the log file (target specified in the configuration file) already exists. For example, if the target is specified as /abc/def/ghi.log, the path /abc/def/ should already exist, and should be writable by root-user.

SysFaultMgmt currently supports the following:
- PA-RISC servers:
- rp24X0 Servers
- rp54X0 Servers
- rp7400 Servers
- rp7410 Servers
- rp8400 Servers
- SD16000, SD32000, SD64000 Servers
- HP Integrity Servers
- HP Integrity Servers SD16A, SD32A, SD64A
- HP Integrity Server rx7620
- HP Integrity Server rx8620
- HP Integrity Server rx2600
- HP Integrity Server rx4640
- HP Integrity Server rx5670
The EMS-to-WBEM Wrapper Provider supports all platforms running HP-UX 11i v2.
When a client makes a call to the CPU or Memory Provider on an unsupported system, a "CIMNotSupported" exception will occur. The EMS-to-WBEM Wrapper Provider, however, will work on all HP-UX 11i v2 platforms, including those that are not supported by the CPU or Memory Providers.
For PA-RISC servers running HP-UX 11i v2:
- LPMC (now CPU) (lpmc_em)
- Memory (dm_memory)
- Core HW (dm_core_hw)
- Chassis Code (dm_chassis)
- Disk (disk_em)
- High Availability Disk Array (ha_disk_array)
- Integrity Core Hardware Monitor(ia64_corehw)
- IPMI Forward Progress Log Monitor (fpl_em)
For Itanium servers:
- Corrected Platform Error Monitor (cpe_em)
- IPMI Forward Progress Log Monitor (fpl_em)
- CMC Monitor (cmc_em)
- Itanium Core Hardware Monitor(ia64_corehw)
- SCSI Disk Monitor (disk_em)
- High Availability Disk Array Monitor (ha_disk_array)
- Itanium Memory Monitor (memory_ia64)
Use CHART to report defects in System Fault Management. The project name is diag.sfm.providers. If you don't have access to CHART, contact an HP representative to enter a defect for you.
The SysFaultMgmt providers are installed as part of the SysFaultMgmt bundle (product number SYSFAULTMGMT). In addition, the EMS Wrapper provider utilizes the EMS framework, product number B7609BA.
