The installation process is covered in Chapter 5 of the "Support Plus: Diagnostics User's Guide," available at this website. The rest of this page gives a quick summary of the installation process. It is not a subsitute for the complete write-up in the manual.
You can load the Support Tools from CD-ROM or over the Web. If you can obtain the current Support Plus Media (CD-ROM), consider using that instead of downloading from the Web. The Support Plus Media contains the required patches and may load faster onto your system.
NOTE on HP-UX 11i and 11.20: The Support Tools are automatically installed when the OS is installed on HP-UX 11i and HP-UX 11.20. The only reason for using the process described here is to update the Support Tools to a more current version.
NOTE on HP-UX 11.00: Many new computer systems running HP-UX 11.00 have the Support Tools already installed through the "Instant Ignition" process. If this is the case, the only reason for using the process described here is to update the Support Tools to a more current version.
Installation Steps (Summary)
Determine your HP-UX version (for example, HP-UX 11.0 or HP-UX 10.20) and system platform (S800 or S700). Servers are S800 and workstations are S700.
Read the latest DIAGNOSTIC.readme file for the release. This document has important information about problems you may encounter installing the diagnostics. This is especially important for high availability systems that use products like ServiceGuard and Predictive Support.
In particular, determine which patches must be installed first before you install the diagnostics. See the section "Required Patches" in the DIAGNOSTICS.readme file for the current release (IPR) of Support Tools.
The DIAGNOSTIC.readme file is available online at: http://docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/diag/st/st_read.htm
Obtain the required patches. Patches are available on Support Plus (either the Support Plus Media or the Support Plus downloadable bundles on this site). Patches are also available from the HP IT Resource Center (http://us.itrc.hp.com). If a patch should be loaded before the diagnostics, load it now. For example, HP-UX 11.00 currently requires that patch PHKL_18543 (or its successor patch) be loaded before the diagnostics. Note that this patch has dependencies.
CAUTION: All OS kernel patches (PHKL_xxxxx) require an automatic reboot.
Get a copy of the OnlineDiag Software Depot (SD), which is the delivery vehicle for the Support Tools. This depot contains:
- Support Tools Manager (STM), the online diagnostics
- EMS Hardware Monitors
- Some of the offline diagnostics (to use all the offline diagnostics, you must use the Support Plus Media).
- Predict Support (optional)
You can obtain the OnlineDiag depot in two different ways:
- The Support Plus Media (CD-ROM) for your operating system.
- Via the website "HP Software Depot". Download the appropriate version of the Support Tools depot, for example: HP-UX 11.0, HP-UX 10.20 (S800), or HP-UX 10.20 (S700). See "Downloading Support Tools Over the Web"
CAUTION: A system reboot may or may not be required during the installation process:
- HP-UX 11.0 and later do not require a reboot.
- For HP-UX 10.20, December 1999 release and later, if all of the diagnostic drivers required by the diagnostic system are present in the kernel and have the correct version, the system will not reboot after installing the diagnostics. If the correct version of diagnostic drivers are not present in the kernel, the correct versions will be installed, a kernel rebuild is invoked, and the system will be rebooted.
- For HP-UX before 11.0 (and HP-UX 10.20 before December 1999), a kernel rebuild is invoked and the system will be rebooted.
Call up the swinstall program and proceed as described in Chapter 5 of the "Support Plus: Diagnostics User's Guide."
If any patches need to be loaded AFTER the diagnostics are installed, install them now.
