DIAGNOSTIC.readme file (HP-UX 11i V1.5, September 2001)

This DIAGNOSTICS.readme document covers the initial HP-UX 11i V1.5 release of the hardware support tools (diagnostics).

Overview

The HP-UX 11i V1.5 release, for September 2001, supports the Itanium Processor Family (IPF), which is composed of two different computer models:

The original release of HP-UX 11i V1.5 only supported the RX4610.

The three kinds of support tools normally provided for HP-UX systems are also provided for HP-UX 11i V1.5:

Distribution

The support tools (online diagnostics and monitors) are distributed on the Core-OS DVD for 11i V1.5. When the HP-UX 11i V1.5 operating system is installed, the support tools are automatically installed.

The offline diagnostics are distributed on CD-ROMs which are shipped with HP-UX 11i V1.5 computers. There are different CD-ROMs for the RX4610 and for the RX9610.

If you have the original release of HP-UX 11i V1.5 already installed, you can update the diagnostics from the Core-OS DVD. When you are updating the Core-OS, you will be prompted whether to update the diagnostics.

Online Diagnostics (STM)

The platform for online diagnostics on HP-UX 11i V1.5 is the Support Tools Manager (STM), just as on other versions of HP-UX. You run online diagnostics in exactly the same way as on other systems. For further information on STM, see the STM documents at Diagnostics home site . For example:

NOTE: Special Procedure for xstm Help. The xstm (graphical interface) for diagnostics needs the Netscape browser to display online help. Please install Netscape from the AR (Application Release) Media supplied with the computer.

EMS Hardware Monitors

The EMS hardware monitors on HP-UX 11i V1.5 operate in the same way as monitors on other versions of HP-UX. When the system is booted, the monitors appropriate for the system's hardware are automatically started.

Hardware monitors available for the HP-UX 11i V1.5 computers. For further information on monitors, see the documents on EMS hardware monitors at Diagnostics home site . For example:

Offline Diagnostics

The offline diagnostics for systems running HP-UX 11i V1.5 are different than the ODE offline diagnostics used on other HP-UX computers.

The offline diagnostics are distributed on CD-ROMs which are shipped with HP-UX 11i V1.5 computers. There are different CD-ROMs for the RX4610 and for the RX9610.

The offline diagnostics for both the RX4610 and RX9610 are run from the EFI shell prompt.

The offline diagnostics for HP-UX 11i V1.5 are documented in the hardware support manuals for the RX4610 and RX9610 in the Systems Hardware HP homesite:
http://docs.hp.com/hpux/hw/

Required and Recommended Patches

This document lists the required and recommended patches at the time of writing.

One patch is required for the HP-UX 11i V1.5, September 2001, release:

Patch REQUIRED for RX9610 (NOT REQUIRED for RX4610):
For HP-UX 11.20:
      PHKL_25178

The purpose of this patch is to enable Corrected Platform Errors (CPE) logging, to ensure that CPE errors on RX6910 are logged and handled correctly.

The installation is the same as for all kernel patches: install and rebuild. The diagnostics patch can be loaded first, but CPEs won't be reported to the diagnostics until this patch is installed.

Known Problems

Problem: Online help may not work for xstm diagnostics.

Symptoms: In xstm (the graphical interface for online diagnostics), no online help appears when you enter a command for online help. The diagnostics themselves are still functional.

Cause/Action: Online help for xstm requires that the Netscape browser be installed on the computer. The xstm interface invokes the Netscape browser to display .htm files located in the diagnostics sub-directories on disk. (The mstm and cstm interfaces do not use the Netscape browser.)

The easiest way to install the Netscape browser is from the AR (Application Release) Media supplied with the computer.

Alternative: Using any computer, you can view online help for xstm, mstm, and cstm on the Internet at: http://docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/diag/stm/sth_summ.htm

Removing Diagnostics

If you wish to remove the STM online diagnostic system after it has already been installed, type:

           swremove OnlineDiag

Getting More Information

You can get more information on Diagnostics (Support Tools) in the following ways:

  1. Once you install a specific stream (e.g., HP-UX 11i V1.5), the Release Notes for that stream are available:
    Support Tools Manager (STM): /usr/sbin/stm/Rel_NOTES.STM
    EMS hardware monitors: /usr/sbin/stm/Rel_NOTES.HWE

  2. For the latest information on hardware support tools, such as STM, refer to the " Diagnostics" section of Hewlett-Packard's online documentation Web site at:
    http://docs.hp.com/hpux/diag/

This site provides manuals, tutorials, FAQs, and other reference material.

This site has the latest information on HP-11i V1.5 support tools:

  3. Two complete manuals ("Support Plus: Diagnostics User's Guide" and "EMS Hardware Monitors User's Guide") appear on the Web site and on the distribution DVD.
