Release Notes for STM on HP-UX 11.00 (September 2000)
These release notes cover the September 2000 (IPR 0009) release of
Support Plus for HP-UX 11.00 running on S800/S700 systems.
NOTE: As of the September 1999 release, the name of the
Diagnostic/IPR Media has been changed to Support Plus. In addition,
the format has changed so that there is a separate CD-ROM for each
version of the operating system (HP-UX 10.20 and HP-UX
11.0).
Overview
The Support Tools Manager (STM) provides a complete set of online
support tools for HP-UX systems, enabling you to verify and
troubleshoot PA-RISC system hardware, and to examine system logs.
STM offers several tool types, including information tools,
verifiers, exercisers, expert tools, firmware update tools,
diagnostics and utilities.
Installed with STM (as of IPR 9902) are the EMS Hardware Monitors,
an important tool for maintaining system availability. The EMS
hardware monitors allow you to monitor the operation of a wide
variety of hardware products and be alerted immediately if any
failure or other unusual event occurs. For more information, see
/usr/sbin/stm/Rel_NOTES.HWE.
Documentation
For the latest and most complete information on STM and EMS
Hardware Event Monitors, see the Web page "Diagnostics":

At this site, you will find Overviews, Tutorials, Quick Reference
Cards, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), and much other
material.
Changes
The online Support Tools Manager (STM) was enhanced and updated
for the current release.
Changes to User
Interface and Platform
- Fixed a problem with memlogd, the memory error logging daemon.
The probelem occurred when a single bit error was detected and
cleared. Clearing the error caused memlogd to abort. Once memlogd
had aborted, the customer would not have been to restart memlogd.
When memlogd was restarted, it read and cleared errors, so as soon
as it cleared errors it would abort every time.
The problem only occurs on IPR 9906 through IPR 0006, on older HP
9000 computers, including:
- T-Class
- 850 family (850/855/860/870)
- 825 family (for example, 825, 835, 845)
- 842/852/948/958
- 832 family (822, 832, 842, 852, etc.)
The problem does NOT occur on A-Class, J-Class, K-Class,
L-Class, N-Class, V-Class and other recent systems.
- Fixed a problem with memlogd, the memory error logging daemon,
whereby memlogd was not able to clear single-bit errors on L-Class
systms.
General
Changes to Tools
Changes to
Specific Tools
- Information tools:
- Fixed a problem with the CPU Information tool on
multi-processor (MP) systems. If the CPU Information tool was
run on a processor numbered above 0, then 100s of warning
messages would be logged to the syslog.log file, making that
file grow very large.
- Fixed a bug in the Information tool for the RAID 4si
product (A5856A), also known as Internal RAID or I2O RAID. The
bug caused the Info tool to print out garbage text after a
firmware update. (JAGad05112).
- Fixed problems with the Information Tool for the FC60 (HP
Fibre Channel High Availability Disk Array Model 60/FC).
- (JAGab65562) Now regardless of the array configuration
you always see the disk enclosure controller A first then
controller B.
- (JAGad03372) Added new lun state 83 to be decoded by
MESA.
- (JAGac88844) Changed the power supply and fan
designations from 1 and 2 to A and B.
- Added support for "HPDVD-ROM 6x/32x" device.
- Exerciser tools:
- Verifier tools:
- Fixed a problem, whereby a verifier run on HP A1262A/A1299A
FX5/FX10 graphics (codename "Rockwood") will erroneously report
an error if the Frame Buffer Control chip is Rev. c. You can
check whether the product contains the Rev. c. chip by using
the Info tool.
- Diagnose tools:
- Firmware update tools:
- Fixed firmware update problems with DLT tape drives in HP
libraries (codename "Galactica").
- Increased the reliability of the Firmware Update tool for
SSD DLT tape libraries.
- Fixed serial number corruption that occurred on all DLT
tape drives in HP libraries (codename "Galactica"),
HPC7145-8000 autochanger (codename "Proton"), Pulsar, Quasar,
and Rialto libraries. Model numbers of products affected:
Pulsar: A4851A
Quasar: A3544A, A3545A, A3546A, A4850A, A4855A
Rialto: A5501A, A1375A
Galactica: A5583A, A5584A, A4680AZ, A5680AHP, A4681AHP, A5585A,
A5586A, A4682AZ, A5682AHP, A4683AHP, A5587A, A5588A, A4684AZ,
A5684AHP, A4685AHP, A4665A, A4666A, A4667A, A4667A, A4669A,
A4670A
Proton: This product is not targeted for the Enterprise channel
and therefore has no Enterprise model numbers.
- Fixed Firmware update tool for the RAID 4si product
(A5856A), also known as Internal RAID or I2O RAID. Fixed a
typographical error in the firmware download failure message.
- Added support for "HPDVD-ROM 6x/32x" device.
- Expert tools:
- Fixed problems with the Expert Tool for the FC60 (HP Fibre
Channel High Availability Disk Array Model 60/FC).
- (JAGab41081) Now when there are not enough drives for a
RAID level you'll get the message that the command was
CANCELED instead of FAILED.
- (JAGab71260) A lun that is rebuilding now cannot be
selected for unbinding as that would fail anyway.
- Added UTM lun support if it is available from the am60
command line tools.
- (JAGab73711) There was an error in the code that
resulted in a redundant configuration bringing up a message
stating that it was NOT redundant. That is now fixed.
- (JAGab70945) In the Flash drive selection window an
empty disk slot would show up as a FAULT for that disk, now
it shows up as empty.
- (JAGab00205) When selecting drives for hot spares the
enclosure was showing the tray number now it shows the disk
enclosure number.
- (JAGad08406) When running the command
"Utilities->Controller Mode ..." there is the
possibility that the command will fail stating that one of
the controllers is either faulted or not installed when in
fact both controllers are there and not faulted. This has
been fixed
- Added support for "HPDVD-ROM 6x/32x" device.
- Logtool:
- Added decode module for L-Class, Models L3000 (codename
Marcato).
- (JAGad21327) Added support for LPMC decode module for
A-Class (Models A400 and A500, codename Crescendo II), for the
J6000 (codename Duet).
- Added decode module for the RAID 4si product (A5856A), also
known as Internal RAID or I2O RAID. This product provides
Internal RAID functionality to N and L Class Machines.

CAUTION
: Monitoring Changes for disc30, sdisk and disk array devices
As of IPR 9902 (Feb 99 release), there has been a change to the
way that monitoring is done for disc30, sdisk and the HA Disk Array
Models 10, 20, and 30FC.
Formerly, the "diaglogd exec" programs (pdisc30_exec,
pharaymon_exec, and psdisk_exec) handled driver error entries for
these devices.
As of IPR 9902, these programs have been deleted and their
functionality is now provided by the EMS Hardware Monitors.
If you had customized the configuration files for the diaglogd
exec programs (disk30_exec.cfg, sdisk_exec.cfg, and
haraymon_exec.cfg) you may wish to re-configure the EMS Hardware
Monitors to achieve the same results.
Defect
